Generally are trainers cheaper in NYC?

Because I need some decent footwear but I'm conscious of how much trainers are these days. I don't go to the gym but I walk a lot and in NYC I am planning on walking everywhere but I still need to look alright to go into a bar after all that walking. Should I wait until I get there or should I potentially pay more money but buy them now and start breaking them in?

Marking my place as we are off to NYC in October and I want tips for gym trainers and walking trainersSmile

I wouldn't wear trainers for walking. Get some decent boots for walking so you can go to a bar afterwards

Trainers are for walking off road really

Each,

I think American brands most likely would be. It depends what you are looking for, I suppose. I'd hazard a guess that Skechers would be cheaper and a friend of mine swears by their "comfy air trainer" cant remember its proper name. Nike would also be cheaper, I'd imagine.
If you are going to break in any new footwear, you might want to try Compeed plasters. They are fab for stopping blisters or padding over bits that are getting badly rubbed by footwear.

BigTilly, I dont know what type of trainers you normally wear to work out; I spoke to a lady who works for Brooks shoes (They are my preferred running shoe). They are an American brand and she said I'd get them cheaper over there.
Also going to NYC in October!

Ooh spub, how exciting!

I normally wear Nike's but a friend has said that apparently they aren't any cheaper there.

Trainers are very "on trend" right now, for going out in. In London, at least. And of the very bright/fluorescent type!

Potap - thanks, I'd forgotten about that wee tourist discount. Will make full use of it Grin
BigTilly - I know! I LOVE NYC. Hope you also have a fab time. My running shoes have some flouro bits on them but i think my feet would look like glowing canoes if I went all out flouro. Plus, I'm now too old to go clubbing so the age/canoe feet thing wouldn't go so well! I hope you find some bargains and aren't there loads of Nike outlets here in the UK?

I don't think trainers are ' on trend' here in London. It's just many people wear on school run for example as run afterwards. Many 'nice' bars and restaurants still won't let entry in trainers. Hence I wouldn't wear out of planning on going anywhere.

Walking fine. But you prob need to go back to hotel to change before evening

I went to NYC a year ago, and trainers were fine, everyone was wearing them. I think I'd still want to get changed for dinner though (although it's not a necessity). I bought some Asics trainers (I don't think they're an American brand though?) while I was there and they were virtually the same price as here, full price. Sales tend to be better in the US, and depending on how much time you have, you could hunt down sales shops like Century 21, TJ Maxx, or that massive outlet mall they have just outside of NY (not been myself, but I go outlet shopping in Florida and always buy my sports stuff there - MUCH cheaper - I got the same pair of Asics trainers 6 months later in a Florida Asics outlet for less than half price).

Thanks Potap - good tip!

spub, I am so excited - it's our first timeSmile

Carrie, are there October sales there? !

Sales can be a bit random. I did really well in J Crew, and got some money off some cashmere in Uniqlo, but other than that, I don't recall any sales :(

Thanks carrie. Do they have voucher codes like we get here, do you think?

I want some really bright trainers desperately, send me some good links! :)

I'm in the US but I don't know what they cost there so I couldn't tell you the difference.

October is not a good month for sales. If you want to price check go online. Nordstrom will give you a good idea. Don't forget to add sales tax too. It's 8.25% in NYC I think. I buy in NJ as no sales tax on clothing items less than $200. I think it's for clothes only and not shoes though.

Last time I was in the states I was a bit taken aback by how expensive it had gotten and how many of the shops were the same as the uk. Do some online price comparisons before deciding.

In my experience, everything is a lot cheaper (3 trips this year) and so much more choice - do a lot of shopping over there.

Take 1 old crappy pair of shoes with you and chuck on way home to give you room in your bag.

My American BFF and her sister visited England and were denied access to a cluB as they were wearing trainers
both were pretty shocked as had been wearing proper bras for years.

Apparently trainers are training bras ... sneakers or runners are what you want

Want2bSupermum · 29/09/2015 21:30

Not sure about trainers being bras but no one will know what you are talking about unless you say sneekers.

I've gone on their American site and the bags are noticeably cheaper. I'm not bothered with the outlets but I do like to pick up tights and spanx from the small Century 21. Anything worth getting from Seohora?

Ooh, just browsing the Century 21 website and it has some nice stuff - where would I find a shop in NYC?

Big Tilly,
Century 21 is right across the street from the former twin towers site. It's like TK Maxx on steroids! Grin
