My husband is being made redundant next week for the second time in 2 years and as we used up all our savings last time around (and haven't rebuilt them, as he took a 30% paycut in his current job), we really need to bring in some cash asap.

I have quite a few items of clothing I could sell. Some are brand new with tags, some unworn but without tags and others worn once. Some are designer (DVF, Donna Karan, Jimmy Choo shoes), others are LK Bennett, Hobbs, or Joseph or similar French brands (I live in France).

Where would you sell them and for how much in relation to their original purchase price?

Has anyone used vestiairecollective? Is it worth trying or should I stick to e-bay? Is there anywhere else you can suggest? There are a couple of 2nd hand dress agencies in my city but I've never been in. Has anyone any experience of that type of shop?

I'd really be grateful for any advice as I've only ever sold kids' clothes or more practical stuff on e-bay and am not sure of the best way to go about this.

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time at the moment. I buy and sell a lot on eBay and what works for me is to do a bit of research on each item, see how much other similar items are selling for and then I list as a Buy It Now. Don't set your price too high, but think about what you would be happy to get for the item. There is nothing worse that selling your designer dress for £15 because that was the highest auction bid. My things almost always sell as BIN, sometimes I might need to relist a few times and adjust the price slightly but I usually get a decent price for everything.

I haven't sold with Vestiare, I have only bought from them. I know they have a higher commission than eBay but also prices seem higher so it might even itself out. Might be worth trying with your French brands as I get the impression it's more popular there. I usually use it to buy French brands like Marant and Vanessa Bruno.

If you go with eBay, take lots of photos and don't bother writing too much of a description. It's so time consuming, and the photos matter more. The easiest way is using the eBay phone app.

Good luck, hope it works out for you

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'm working a short shift tomorrow, so will take lots of pictures and try to get as much as I can listed.
I may try the shoes on Vestiaire and the rest on e-bay....

I'm an eBay Trading Assistant. As a general rule eBay fees are around 10% and PayPal around 4% (of selling price, although you pay extra for a Buy It Now I think). I never use BIN. As milk said, research the item and don't worry too much about the description. Also think about the finishing times when listing (ie not 9am!).

Good luck.

I've sold a few expensive/designer shoes on Vestiaire, worked really well. They sold quickly, especially the new / unworn ones. Have a look at existing items to get a feel for the prices.

OMG. I had never heard of this site and have just spent the best part of two hours trawling through all the handbags! Have resisted temptation so far though...
