Wedding in 2 weeks. Fat and clueless. Help!

I am 5'10, size 18, bottom heavy, pale skinned and prefer to cover as much skin as possible due to acne on back, thread veins on legs and flabby white keratosis pilaris (sp?) covered upper arms.

I had a look in a few high street shops today and tried loads of things. This spotty dress looked OK (apart from flabby arms but maybe a spot of fake tan would help) but I didn't love it. Mainly because I would prefer a plain colour, or a subtle pattern, and I don't know what to do with my legs (tights in July?) or wear on my feet.

You know what? I'm 41 and I feel more like 61. I am fat, I have terrible skin, I live in comfy, cover all clothes and trainers. I don't have a clue what's fashionable or what suits me. I'm totally lost. Please help!

  1. Stop speaking about yourself in such an unkind fashion. You are a person who deserves to be spoken about well.

  1. Are you drinking lots of water and moisturising? That will help your skin.

  1. Taupe isn't a great colour for us milky whites. How about something like this gorgeous flattering Phase Eight dress? In the sale too! You could always wear a little bolero or wrap if you're very bothered about your arms.

  1. I did a home made salt scrub on my arms for a few nights before fake tanning. Smoothed the skin nicely.

Or this semi fitted maxi then you don't need to think about your legs, just paint your toenails a pretty colour.

I wouldn't recommend a maxi. Not sure they are smart enough for a wedding, and very often make larger ladies (I'm one, at least on the bust) look bigger.

How about a pair of cream wide legged trousers, wedge heels and a lovely top - elbow length sleeves perhaps. You'd look smart, areas that bother you would be hidden and I reckon you'd look hawt.

I really like that maxi dress but it's out of my price range. Under £50 is the budget.

Thanks for your kind words by the way. My self esteem is on the floor, so it really made me well up.

I have some white linen style wide leg trousers. Is white OK? What sort of top? (Totally clueless)

Not sure linen would work tbh. It creases easily and looks tatty when it does. Thicker material better. That sort of shape though.

Have a look at Wallis and Dorothy Perkins - both have online offers today. Reckon you could get some really nice trousers and tops for about £50.

With your height, any thing long will look great. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day moisturize twice a day and get plenty of sleep. Your skin has plenty of time to look fab, the water will hydrate you and reduce bloating if you stick at it. My diet is rubbish due to working very irregular shifts but provided i drink lots of water i just about manage not to look too hagared. Im only 5'2 and wish i was as tall as you are.

I have awful varicose veins and find Rimmel instant shimmer sun (or something like that) is easy to apply and covers them all !
Good luck.

M&S have quite a few dresses with arms. Nude tights would probably cover up your veins, especially with fake tan. In all honesty though, everyone is so preoccupied with how they look at a wedding, they won't even notice your veins or bumpy arms.

WRT the bumpy arms, get them out in the sun. It makes mine so much better.

What about this black and white maxi?
Black and white maxi
The sleeves are nice and it's in your budget, plus I'm guessing you'll have black accessories already.

I quite like this for a wedding Pink floral maxi and it's cheap enough in the sale that you could buy a bolera or shrug to cover your arms.

I've just bought this

www.lookagain.co.uk/products/jersey-dress-by-chillytime/_/A-666466_20

I'm a 16 top and 14 bottom and nothing like the model but it looks great and I'm wearing it to a wedding next week with strappy wedge sandals and fake tan. Ordered 2 sizes and returning 1. Only £32. Honestly, try it, you can always return them both. It's less 'brassy' than it appears in the picture.

Have you thought of a salwar kameez? They come in beautiful fabrics and colours. I am considering one for a wedding i am going to soon.

Congratulations on your wedding! Can't help with clothes I'm afraid because I'm rubbish at it, but with regards to your skin, have you ever tried body brushing? My skin (also pretty dreadful, dry, kind of blue white) always looks loads better if I body brush and moisturise every day. Two weeks is ages of time to feel better about your skin. You can get bristly brushes from Boots or the Body shop and while you're there you can get some lovely body moisturiser that will help you to feel better about how you look and feel.

I'd second drinking plenty of water, and I'd also recommend taking a high dose fish oil. Being deficient in essential fatty acids shows up in your skin - look for one with upwards of 250mg Dha and Epa. Like with the body brushing, two weeks is a decent amount of time to improve things.

I hope you're feeling excited about the wedding in amongst the worries about how you look Flowers

LosingMyReligion, I really like that chillytime dress but I fear that it would look much nicer on you than me, because you are top heavy, and I am bottom heavy. I have a large bottom and very large, square shaped hips. Anything that clings to my hip shelf just makes me feel dreadful.

No, not my wedding!

You need to drink lots of water, exfoliate then moisturise your arms (go to BM bargains, exfoliating gloves + moisturiser= miracles, I really suffer with this).
I am a busty hourglass 5ft 9" woman, you want nothing flouncy or frilly, think body skimming or body forming.

Hi OP

I am size 22 and 5'8.
Trust me I would love to be 5'10 and size 18!! Skin can be sorted I too have varicose veins and have learned to accept them.

As I too have a large bottom half, dresses don't suit me, so I tend to wear trousers whatever the occasion :-)

Trousers can be dressed up with accessories such as glamorous shoes and bag. Go one color top and trousers and wear with a vibrant colour jacket.
Statement jewellery can also bling up an otherwise plain top.

Everywhere has their sales on at moment with places like Debenhams having up to 70% off. So it is possible to get a quality outfit at a good price.

I advise you to wear what you feel comfortable in otherwise you will not feel confident on the day.

Follow the advice given by others about your skin relax and have a good day.
