I have found Cos useful for dresses and also for long coat-style jackets. A long jacket can be thrown over any old dresses or tops and trousers to smarten them up. They also do a very good variety of tops. Their trousers tend to be either good or disastrous, you just have to try a few on.

Hobbs is sometimes good (particularly for dresses with matching jackets), sometimes very dull, although their stuff is decent quality. Ditto Jaeger, though I buy in the sale only.

Banana Republic is worth a look, but most of their stuff I find too short.

John Lewis is a fairly happy hunting ground for me, especially at sale time. Lots of labels in a small area.

Next do good work tops to wear with suits and separates. However, I still like dresses and jackets.

This black dress from M&S does the job perfectly - huge range of jackets, shoes and accessories work with it and flattering too.
