Stretch mark removal / improvement

So I put on weight recently and as a result I have some lovely new red stretch marks on my legs.

I went to see a specialist who said there is a machine you can get to use at home which will help! It apparently has lots of little needles.

Does anyone know what this is or if it actually works?

She also said it won't help the old stretch marks.
