Lightening hair with lemon/camomile

I haven't done this since I was 12 but thought I'd have a go!

I really wanted to get some balayage type highlights but my hair is really fine (truth be told I'm going really thin around my temples and crown,mildly panicked about it but there's nothing I can do,I come from a long line of follicley challenged) anyway,I reluctant to put any bleach on my hair incase it causes more damage so thought I'd try a homemade lemon and camomile spray. I haven't noticed any change so far but we haven't had much sun.

Has anyone had any success with this or can recommend a natural alternative?
