going grey disgracefully

So my hair dye is a mess and I've a tonne of build up, so I thought fuckit, I'll BE BRAVE and let it go as long as I can before a bit of a chop and then I'll re dye the roots a much lighter colour and repeat until it's fixed. A hair dresser advised against stripping the old dye out due to my hair type, saying it would ruin it and suggested this plan.

It looks a mess. It's pretty grey, striped with old colour and maybe about 50%at the roots.

Today a similarly aged colleague said "wow, I can't believe how grey you are, I'd never have guessed before. You look so distinguished though". I did die, just for a moment.

I now feel shit, and also disgusted at myself for caring. Im only 40 and until now have only ever been told I look stylish at work. Wah! Distinguished is officially NOT GOOD for 40, right?

I'm not sure would have meant it in a derogatory way, it's just a word that's often used for grey haired men so maybe she just said it without thinking too much? Maybe she meant elegant, sophisticated?

Could you not just cut it shorter? Is it the old colour that's making it look shit?
Fuck them with the distinguished comment. I think she was probably just looking for the right word. have you seen the other thread with Eyeliner Queen's hair. It looks awesome. You should go chat to her. She took the clippers to hers.

It's entitled "a year ago today.." or something like that... it's in S&b chat just now.

I was told I looked distinguished because of the white streaks at my temples at 31 years of age. I'm 43 now, so quite a bit whiter and I love it. I keep putting that purple shampoo in to make the white glow whiter.

I'm basically too lazy to maintain any kind of hair maintenance so long gold and silver hair it is then. I still get compliments from those who like it. I know other people think it's dreadful how I've let myself go but I ignore them as they are clearly wrong.
