1970's party- how to look stylish and authentic?

I'm looking for ideas on an outfit for my 40th birthday. I'm having a 1970s disco party but I don't want to look like a complete idiot at my own party- these photos will stay with me forevermore!
I am (almost) 40 and I won't be rocking a hot pants look, but I do want to look the part. I'm a size 10 and a classic pear shape so fitted on top, nipped in waist and skimming over the bottom is ideal. I've seen lots of quite seventies maxi dresses which would be flattering on asos but they weren't really worn for a disco were they? Googling for 1970s outfits just gets me loads of cheap and nasty fancy dress. Any suggestions?

You need to think Studio 54...Bianca Jagger in Halston.

Something like this with optional fishnet tights, v. High platforms and a floppy hat like this

This one is more seventies.

Not sure if this is 70s style, I was thinking with tights and platforms, or am I veering into the 60s Confused

Love that glittery maxi! Amazing!

Love the Etsy vintage dress & the second jumpsuit. The Next dress is more late 60s

I'd say that was too sixties... Disco was late 70s, so more fluid shapes, sparkle and glitz. Midi or maxi length dresses, trousers or jumpsuits.

I'm a very similar shape to you and wore this jumpsuit to my 70s themed birthday recently - glammed it up with gold disco shoes, gold hoops and a belt. Got lots of compliments and flattering without being too revealing - I did have to wear tit tape though as it's quite low cut.

Don't know if anyone's linked to this nice Ted Baker jobby, it's reduced to £80 and plenty of choice size wise.

I hope you've booked your Farrah Fawcett blow dry?

ooo thanks. Some great suggestions here. Jumpsuits are a fab idea and the wide legs would be flattering for me.
I totally looove the look of the etsy dress tethersend- looks like something donna summer would wear.

I do like the ted baker but this is another total bargain from asos in the sale and there's a further 10% off too. www.asos.com/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=4322727&CTARef=Basket+Page.
Having said that, so much cheap stuff looks great online but when you get it the material is terrible so prob ted baker would be a better option.
Not sure I could carry off the very low AQ jumpsuit. The likelihood of the drunken late night dancing boob-flash is very high, even with tit tape I would think- how long does that stuff stay sticky for when you get hot and sweaty?

If you're anything like me you'll probably spill drink down your boobs as well- definitely something to consider re. adhesion of tit tape.

I actually ordered 8 different jumpsuits from ASOS to try them on and that was the one that looked nicest on me - the material's quite thin but not too crappy. Maybe worth just ordering a load online and seeing which look best? They have an off-the-shoulder one called 'Bardot' which had thicker fabric which I was quite tempted by too.

Wouldn't worry about the tit tape falling off, I have the scholl stuff and it sticks like superglue! Does make it a bit tricky going to the loo though...

Wow, just looked at the AQ jummpsuit - now that is low cut! You'd need industrial amounts of tit tape for that one.

tethersend, I've ordered that etsy vintage dress from US. It says first class post so hopefully will get here in time, I have 3 weeks til the party. I've seen a few pics of donna summer wearing similar dresses with a big flower in her hair. I can curl my hair into loose waves too so think I can pull that one off.
I've also ordered the black jumpsuit wilding recommended (thanks) and a couple more which will be there for back up if the dress doesn't arrive in time or doesn't fit me (measurements sound about right but you never know until you try on).
Just need to find some shoes to go with the dress, its a gorgeous but tricky colour. I already have some gold platforms which would be fine with the black jumpsuit I think.
