Bridal Undies

I'm at the dreaded stage of having to start looking for the underwear I'll wear on my big day, and quite frankly I'm not relishing the idea of this task at all - traipsing round shop after shop having to get my kit on-and-off while lingerie shop assistants faff around with my unmentionables is not my idea of a nice day out! And I reckon it'll take a few weeks of this to find what I need.

Therefore, to try and cut out all this traipsing and stripping, I wondered if those of you who have already been through this experience could offer any brand advice or specific retailer recommendations?

I'm a small busted gal who needs a bit of 'boosting' in the ole boobie department (I had a dress fitting yesterday and the shop assistant loudly pointed out how "we'll have to take this in quite a bit at the bust area hey!" while tugging at my decidedly empty top half . My dress is also strapless with a lace overlay, so my bra will have to be strapless too.

If there are any other small busted ladies who wore a strapless dress for their big day, I'd love to know...what underwear were you wearing?!? (sorry )

OK, first up what size are you? Have a look at this guide to check you're in the right size as if you've ever been fitted by the likes of M&S you possibly aren't.

It makes quite a big difference to suggestions for brands/styles etc (not just being nosy I promise!)

The assistant, however, is an unprofessional moose!

I got my bridal undies from Debenhams, Janet Reger corset, suspenders and thong (and I bought them online!) I know you shouldn't but I am also not the sort who enjoys being in the nuddy in front of anyone I find the whole thing totally embarrassing. I took a chance on the size and it fitted perfectly. It has detachable straps and big removable fillets for plenty of push up (which I also need) it didn't sag or ride up, it was so comfy I didn't want to take it off! And it was invisible under my dress.

I had bra type affair sewn into my dress, was corset, could dressmaker do that?

first, complain about the rude shop assistant. Or take your custom elsewhere if it isn't too late.

you need the right bra to avoid tugging or slipping - your dress must be something you can ignore like all clothes.

apart from that; comfy shoes (painful fugly heels won't show under your dress but will show on your face) and a new pair of knickers. What else is there? Corsets went out in the 1900s as far as I'm aware.

Actually, I'm busty and wore a custom made steel corset under my wedding dress. Was bloody amazing! Corsets are pretty popular just now

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I've already ordered the dress and paid the deposit, so cant really take my custom elsewhere without losing a lot of money.

I'm a 34b usually (although Im finding this differs largely from shop to shop these days, which is very annoying!) and usually a size 6/8 dress size, but my dress was ordered in a size 10 as the shop assistant said wedding dresses are best ordered one size too big so they can be taken in and altered to fit, but unfortunately my bust will NEVER fill a size 10 so in fairness, the shop assistant was right - just rather tactless and to the point!

Im not sure about corsets, esoecially not boned/wired as I have chronic IBS, anything too restrictive around my middle causes spasms and will leave me in a lot pain...not something I want on my wedding day really. Although if it was smooth, stretchy and not too tight, or a longline bra, it could possibly work?

I wore the wonderbra strapless bra and control pants as my dress was fitted and i didn't want a vpl.

I then changed into sexy undies when we went upstairs to bed. I did a quick change in the loo.

The wonderbra and nice knickers, suspenders etc could work.

Was the wonderbra comfortable to wear all day nottheOP? This may be a serious option thanks.

Oh and thanks for the blog link about bra measuring StatisticallyChallenged - gonna try this later and see if I measure differently. This will hopefully prevent me having to take several sizes of the same bra into the changing room (which is obviously time consuming and I get very fed up and moody with it!)

I'd really recommend checking out ultimo. They do a really good range, especially if you are smaller busted, as they have gel options as well.

If you are a size 6/8 then you are absolutely in the wrong size. Not a shadow of doubt about it. The wonderbra ultimate strapless is fab

Im wearing a tea length dress with petticoats underneath so the knickers aren't as much of an issue (unless I fall over and flash everyone!). I've checked out some reviews on the wonderbra and has lots of good ratings, but lots of people also complain about being left with painful marks that take weeks to disappear, blisters and even bruising...sounds like breasticular torture!

If you have the right size the Wonderbra is very comfortable, honestly. I have 3 I think! Unfortunately, lots of people don't really know what a good bra looks or feels like, so they just buy "their size", which probably isn't the right size anyway, without really trying or knowing what to look for. A strapless will tend to hurt more if it fits badly because all of the weight is on the band/wires/cups rather than the shoulders so they can wiggle around more.

Ah Yorkshire I've got a tea length dress too, petticoats and all!
The bodice in mine is strapless but with an illusion neckline - ive just had some cups sewn into the bodice for support (36DD).

Perhaps that could work for you when the bodice has been taken in to fit you better?

I wore a Calvin Klein set under my tea length dress. You'll never wear a more comfortable brand of undies - and much sexier than the usual lacy - frilly - embellished bridal monstrosities

I got a fantastic strapless bra in ivory from Ultimo - it was slightly padded and gave me a much better shape than the similar Wonderbra. My dressmaker thought it was the best bridal bra she had seen. The back was low enough that I could have a slightly low back on my dress though it wouldn't have worked with a backless dress. The band was a lot wider than a normal bra (ie it didn't stop just under the bust, it went down a few inches below that) which may have helped with shape and support. I also has the bridal underwear set from Somerset by Alice Temperley at John Lewis - really pretty cream silk kimono, camisole, bra, knickers etc.

I'm a size 16 and wear a 34: my ED is size 6 and wears a 28.
You really need a good fitting. Whereabouts are you? I can recommend the factory shop at the Eveden factory in Desborough, Northants, if you are central: definitely worth a journey and they have good brands at half price.

You're absolutely not at 34 if you're a size 6/8 - I'm a 30 and a size 12!! Go to a local independant store and get a proper fitting - you'll probably need to go down to at least a 28 and way up in the cup sizes.

Wow Im really intrigued by my bra sizing now... I've tried everything from a 30A upto a 36C and own bra's in a 32A, 32B, 34B, 34C... but find the 34B's the most comfortable. But this is why I absolutely detest bra shopping - Im something different in every shop and I get so fed up of having to try the same style in several sizes. But I desperately want something comfortable and well fitted for the big day... right, Im gonna try the Bra Guru"s blogspot instructions. I'll be back!

I'm another who had a bit of bra support built into my dress by the dress maker - I could slip chicken fillet booster things in there too. My dress was strapless but dipped lower at the back so was really difficult to find a bra so dressmaker suggested this. Might be worth considering?

Ok can anyone help me interpret as Im a tad confused... using the guru's instructions I measure 30" under 34" over. But I still can't work out what bra size that should be
