Moisturiser for dehydrated skin

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/01/2015 16:11

I have combination skin and the dry areas are VERY dry at the moment.

I've tried so many different moisturisers that have worked in the past:

  • origins
  • lush
  • benefit
  • clarins rehydrating moisturiser

But none of them seem to work. I really like dermalogica stuff but have never found a moisturiser that suits me from there.

Any suggestions on alternatives please?

Someone on here recommended Eucerin. I have found it a godsend - the one with 5% urea? It keeps my skin supple even whilst outdoors in harsh weather.

I have this problem only in winter. I use my ordinary moisturiser with 2 drops of aveda balancing infusion- recommended by a facialist.

I have eczema so skin can be very dry indeed.
when it's really bad I double the cream. I use a normal moisuriser, let it sink in and then add a night time moisturiser on top.

Walking beat me to it, Eucerin is the best for seriously dry skin.

No. 7 moisturiser for dry/very dry skin is ok, too. If you want to go seriously fatty and low budget, the famous Waitrose baby bottom butter is great, but very, very greasy.

www.boots.com/en/La-Roche-Posay-Rosaliac-AR-Anti-Redness-Skin-Perfecting-Daily-Moisturiser-40ML_1250075/

I use this under my moisturiser.
I find adding a serum helps me better than just loading on the moisturiser.
I've also used Hydraluron and Clinique Moisture Surge in the past.

I find Clinique dramatically different moisturiser for very dry skin works. Also using a night oil.

I use Decleor night balm.

Vichy Aqualia serum (in the blue bottle) with Clinique Moisture Surge Intense slapped on top, leaves skin soothed and comfortable

Clinique Moisture Surge is good, but I really like Embryolisse. It really works when my (oily, dehydrated) skin gets like parchment during the colder months.

If the skin is painful and raw, I like using La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast. It's not a moisturiser, but it helps to protect and heal the skin quicker. I usually use it on top of moisturiser, but if the skin is really bad (and hurts when using normal moisturisers), I sometimes use it alone.

I'm allergic to eucerin, I have very sensitive skin. I've been using pure coconut oil for the past year and its transformed my skin- it's so cheap too.

i use Olay total effects. with Nivea cream on the drier bits when it happens, but not since I use Olay.

I find Avon reversalist face wash really good. I bought an exfoliating sponge for something like £1.50 from Boots to erase away the flaky skin.

Eurecin is brilliant stuff, it has transformed my skin.

Shonajay, does coconut oil smell like coconut?? I have heard great things about it, but the thought of the smell turns my stomach.

My skin gets so dry it hurts and I've found weleda skin food amazing in the last few months. I use it as night cream or days I'm not wearing make up.

Using oil might help. I use the Fushi rosehip oil (warning, rose hips do not smell like roses). But you could try a plain oil, perhaps with addition of a few drops of one of the aromatherapy oils reputed to be good for skin (eg frankincense).

Jurlique moisture replenishing day cream. It is the best! If you call Jurlique they will often send a sample for you to try before buying. Oh, and it's often cheaper to buy at lookfantastic.com

You need to figure out whether your skin is dry or dehydrated. Sali Hughes explains the difference here.

If it's dehydrated, try Bioderma Hydrabio cream. There's a light version and a rich version - if you're combination, the light one would probably be best. You can get it from Escentual - it's about a tenner IIRC.

I've had flaky skin on my face since I was a child and tried every moisturiser under the sun. I discovered this three years ago and it transformed my skin. There are no flakes now. It's been life-changing for me.

Hydrabio Light

It's £14 but there's 20% off everything at the moment.

I get very dry, flaky skin on my forehead and I've just started using No7 Beautiful Skin 'Dry Skin Rescue' - it's more of a balm to rub into the really dry areas but it does seem to work quite well.

I also recommend hydraluron!!!!! It has changed my skin over the past 6 months. It costs £25 a tube but that has lasted me 6 months using morning and night. You need a tiny amount. You use it with a moisturiser.

I bought Eucerin but found that it smelt rather strangely of bacon fat!!!
I have just bought a Body Shop Aloe Vera cream for dry skin and it's really good.

Best advice instead of piling on more moisturiser would be to use a really good quality facial oil, preferably with high quality essential oils to nourish the dry areas. Use at night, on clean skin, let it absorb in overnight. Use it every 2-3 nights to begin with, then you can drop to weekly once your skin improves ( remember skin takes a month or so to replace itself so you need to give it a while to see if whatever you choose works).
