Are black tights a no no?

I'm going to my works Christmas party next weekend and have bought a black lacy sparkly dress which sits just above the knee. I'm a size 20 with a fine pair of rugby players legs which for obvious reasons would prefer to keep covered. Would I look frumpy in black tights?

Black opaques are absolutely fine.

Sheer black tights are a no. Too Dorien from Birds of a Feather.

I love black tights! Wear them all year round. I think you'll look great as you'll feel more comfortable and therefore more confident. Have a lovely time!

Christ I hope not, I live in them! Opaques though, not thin.

I've just bought some black opaques with gold bits.

Possibly slight trashy, but fun :)

Sheer black tights I find terrible for highlighting every bump and curve of your leg.

Sorry but I have never met anyone in RL who doesn't wear sheer black/barely black tights/stockings. It's a MN thing like the everlasting chicken and not using toilet brushes Wink

Definitely not an MN thing, I would never ever wear sheer black - opaques only.

That's funny CMP I don't know a single person who does.

Yes Trills they exaggerate every imperfection. Yuck!

Be brave and go for fishnets. The most flattering thing possible to put on your legs and perfect for a party.

Opaques have their place but are frumpy with a knee length skirt IMO.

Fair enough but at my work do on Friday I would guess 90% of women has sheer tights mainly a 'shade' of black. Maybe a Northern thing (Newcastle) all ages shapes and typesConfused

Nobody told me about this. I wear sheer black tights quite frequently.

I haven't seen anyone in sheer black tights for years. Maybe it is an area thing?

Black tights are much more flattering than pasty white legs. I agree that people don't wear sheer black tights anymore.

I'd go for 60 denier minimum

You've never met anyone in RL who doesn't wear sheer black tights?

So everyone you know (or everyone who wears skirts) you HAVE seen them in this kind of tights?

I've not seen sheer black tights on my RL friends/relatives/colleagues for at least 10 years.

I have only ever lived in the South though...

M & S sell tonnes of sheer black tights. Someone must be buying them. Do they never get them out of the packet?

CMP69 I don't know anyone who would be caught dead in barely black. Last time I wore them it was the eighties.

Are nude fishnets still ok? I'm off to a work dinner wearing a navy dress with flowers and coral shoes so was hoping nude might work.

OP, def opaques as others have said, you'll look great no doubt.

I love sheer black tights (with or without a back seam) and know loads of people who wear them - is it not meant to be allowed?? I'm in central London.

Not sure sheer would suit thick legs though.

Opaque are fine and will look nice with a black dress. Don't stress!

I'm sure Primark have amazing black opaques.
Primark is called Penneys in Ireland ( where it is headquartered I think) and Penneys have a great selection with diamante studding up the back,
Sequined covered etc. so I presume Primark will have an even better selection as I've been told the UK shops clothing is nicer.

Agree, sheer black tights are a 90s no-no.

OP, you will be fine in opaques.

I bought some new nude fishnets today - I like them a lot. They seem to kind of magically blur your legs.
