Nice nails - really, does it matter?

Doing my nails comes very bottom of my list or priorities. Manicure and polish only for very special occasions. But other mums I know always seem to have immaculate nails.

Does anyone really notice or care? Is it important?

I always do my nails. It is the one thing that makes me feel human.

I don't do my nails at all as I do a lot of gardening/crafts. Gel/shellac/acrylic - all lasts less than 2 hours on me as my nails are very bendy.

I don't think it matters and I've always taken my cue from Carrie Bradshaw who always looked stunning but never did her nails - and I don't think SJP does hers in real life either.

Each to their own.

I don't pay attention to the state of other people's fingernails (feet are another matter Grin).

But I like my own hands to look good.

I really dislike shellac nails, false nails etc, I think they look incredibly tacky. And the real nail underneath all that gunk is dying from lack of ventilation and slowly turning yellow and weakening..it's vile.

I'm for filing them, keeping them healthy looking and clean.

Pretty nails AWhole!!

I love having mine done when I get the time and feel quite dishevelled when they aren't. I'm currently without nail and toenail polish due to a recent op. Can't even get my toenails done because of my compression stockings Xmas Confused might do my nails now although I paint them like a 6 year old.

I always do mine but usually in dark and unusual colours like navy or green. I just really enjoy it, but I don't care what others do to their nails (although sandals and ugly toenails is vile).

I have Shellac and it definitely doesn't look tacky, it looks no different to normal nail varnish apart from it's shinier!

I don't really notice other people's nails to be honest and before I discovered Shellac mine were bitten down anyway.

Its totally unimportant. I think nice painted nails look nice but it stops there. I dont get the whole false nail thing. Its fake and impractical. Paint and do your own

My nails are the one thing about me that are normally groomed. I have them done about once a month and they normally last that long, although occasionally I will lose one or two in the last few days.

My nails look rubbish if I am left to my own devices. I am terrible at shaping and polishing and any varnish looks like it's been applied with a paint roller. So getting them done professionally is my treat to myself.

Because I get mine done, I do notice other people's and have to confess that I find unkempt nails slightly disappointing.

It doesn't matter no... To you

To others it may Shock

I started having my nails painted every two weeks about 2 months ago and it makes me feel much better to have nice nails, i have copious little children and a business to run, so it is my treat and I love it.

I am very low maintainance (never go to the hairdresser, only little make up, mini wardrobe) but I always do my nails. no idea if anybody else cares - I do.

always do them on a Sunday - two coats and a top coat. then no housework for 1h. My nails last a week without chipping so overall I don't inves much time and effort.

defiantly gives a more polished look.

Of course it doesn't matter, but well done nails do look nice, I love painting mine, the more often you do it the easier it gets. I have to spend quite a lot of time looking after my cuticles to keep them from getting tatty, that's probably the worst part.

Ditto OP

I went out the last night, the only night out with DH, I managed to get them filed nice but painted - well I got the polish out an thats about it.

I think the comment about shellac looking tacky may be referring to the nail art picture shellac manicures?

Shellac itself doesn't look tacky but I do think some of the nail art can look cheap.

My nails are often painted but not always as they have to be very short for sport.

I prefer my nails filed, buffed and au naturel. I used to paint them when I was younger, but now painted nails make my fingertips feel cold and I can't stand the chemical smell.

If it makes you happy, though, I don't mind anybody else's fake nails.

Yeah if I do mine I keep it to clear gloss or neutral then they look tidy but doesn't bad when starts ti chip, is easier to get off.

I do mine on a Sunday night, I go to college Monday and Tuesday so I like to make a bit of an effort since I have no life and this is the only time I go out.

I don't mind nails that are not done at all, as long as they are clean, but I cannot abide chipped nail varnish which stays put for days on end. Take 10 mins and remove it ffs.

I've had a manicure about twice in my life OP, and haven't painted my fingernails since my early 20s. (toes get done more often, in summer anyway).

To me it's not that important. Too many other things to do with my time.

I do notice if women have nicely done nails but more to think "good lord when does she get the time" than to admire or envy.

I personally don't like painted nails. I think it looks odd and I hate the feel of varnish on my nails.
Clean and tidy is enough imo. Fancy nails get in my way!

i like doing mine but it comes off quickly, i even bought a red carpet gel set but that crapped my nails out. i do wonder what crap people have under their nails if they're always painted as you can't see the dirt can you Grin

So YOU notice their nails, OP?

But I agree that it is a personal thing, and if it makes you feel better about yourself, then it can only be a good thing.

Personally, I always have my toe nails painted in the summer - they seem to last for a few weeks, so the time taken to do them is worth it. I like to keep my finger nails buffed, filed and clean. I paint them only for very special occasions - they never seem to last very long!

You noticed OP. You noticed to the extent that they are "immaculate".

So to answer your question as to whether anyone notices... Yes. You do.

You started a thread on the subject on people's nails.
