Give me your best bright red lipstick recommendation please - long lasting and not too glossy.......

L'Oreal have this new line of red lipsticks called Pure Reds. There are four different shades, each with a woman's name (apparently celebrities), and each slightly different hue of red to suit different skin tones. The finish is a bit matte rather than slick. I went for the slightly orangey one (I have dark brown hair, pale skin, and blue eyes) and it really works well on me.

There's another, similar, line for nudes.

I really like Soap and Glory's Mantrap.

I have come to the very sad conclusion that I cannot wear red lipstick. I can wear a wine red but not a true red.
I bought a palette of S&G lipcolours a couple of years ago (Mantrap was one of them and it is a really good red, but I found them quite dry)

I bought a couple of Sleek palettes (Tease - wines and reds , and Ballet- nudes). They don't last as long as lipstick in a bullet but I'm trying them out to find the one that suits me then I'll buy the lipstick.

I like the look of the Bourjois ones that were launched earlier this year, in a tube with a wand.

Once you find your colour, Lipcote is amazing.

I love red lipstick but it looks terrible on me! I have red hair and blue eyes do you think there are any that may work?

Glitterkitten24 Sun 23-Nov-14 20:36:17

Mac Russian Red- I'm a winter colouring, and this is a lovely blue red which makes my teeth look nice and white!

It's matte, so looks a bit retro although can be slightly on the drying side.
But I don't wear it everyday, and the colour is amazing!

Try a coral red lipstck Noddy

Marylou2 Sun 23-Nov-14 20:37:33

Mac Russian Red or Nars Jungle Red.Love Mac Ladybug but it's slightly glossy.Oooh Ruby Woo also.....rambles on and on..

MrsBertMacklin Sun 23-Nov-14 20:37:38

S&G Mantrap is a great colour, but satin finish and I find it's off within 2 hours.

Need something semi-matte for any kind of lasting power. High street-wise, try Rimmel Kate Moss in Shade 01.

If happy to spend more, my favourite true red is NARS Jungle Red and for orange red, NARS Heatwave. Perfect formula IME, stays on, not drying.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Sun 23-Nov-14 20:40:57

I just reapply tbh. I hate lipstick that glues itself to my lips.

Grange Sun 23-Nov-14 20:43:17

I second Rimmel Kate Moss shade 1. It has amazing staying power and gets lots of compliments.

cardoon Sun 23-Nov-14 20:45:24

Yes, semi matte is what I need, have not tried NARS, will look at that.

The L'oreal Julianne looks a great colour - can't do dark red, need light and bright...

BelindaAllWorkedOut Sun 23-Nov-14 20:56:08

Maybelline Color Drama lip pencil in Red Essential.

Catswiththumbs Sun 23-Nov-14 20:58:12

Try Topshop lipsticks too. Great colours and matte formula. Doesn't smell or taste nasty. Cheap too!

MrsBertMacklin Sun 23-Nov-14 21:05:41

Noddy, have just looked at your profile to see if you'd be best with an orange-based or a blue-based red and firstly can I just say, WOW: Cheekbones!

I think you would look good in a true red, (Hollywood red, not leaning too blue or orange), or an orange red, not too dark. Ones I would try at the counters:
Laura Mercier Portofino Red (orange red)
Bobbi Brown Red Carpet
Kate Moss 01 mentioned above
TopShop Rio Rio
The L'Oreal Julianne Moore one mentioned above

Alo think a brick/teracotta red might look good, but don't use those myself so can't recommend shades.

Mac lady danger - google, it's my fave at the mo, but boujois rouge no 10 lipstick is great -that have a suede Matt red that's also lovely.

OttiliaVonBCup Sun 23-Nov-14 21:18:54

Revlon Cherries in the snow
Nars Manhunt

Lonelynessie Sun 23-Nov-14 21:19:58

Mac Russian Red or Ruby Woo, apparently made to suit everyone.

OttiliaVonBCup Sun 23-Nov-14 21:24:29

Oh hold on, Manhunt is sheer and won't last long.
Try Jungle Red or Rita.

OttiliaVonBCup Sun 23-Nov-14 21:25:14

Or even better, go to a Lipstick Queen counter.
Soho would be lovely.

70isaLimitNotaTarget Sun 23-Nov-14 21:27:38

OOoh I hated Kate Moss No1, that was reincarnated as a Hallowe'en lipstick for me shock

MsIngaFewmarbles Sun 23-Nov-14 21:32:23

Can I hijack and ask what red would work for me? I'm an Autumn/warm deep soft.

OttiliaVonBCup Sun 23-Nov-14 21:37:27

Nars Gypsy Inga

cardoon Sun 23-Nov-14 21:38:25

I have Lady Danger but think it's too orange for me...

MissBeehiving Sun 23-Nov-14 21:41:47

Maybelline Colour Drama lip pencils are good
