Warm smart winter coat for work commute

whattheseithakasmean · 31/10/2014 17:34

I am starting a new job involving a commute by train. I need a new coat that is both warm & smart & ideally will go over a smart suit jacket.

I am petite - 5'1" & size 8. Any recommendations?

Budget?

I would go up to £150 for the right coat.

I saw one I liked in Debenhams, but it had poppers, not buttons, which I thought looked ugly.

Depends on what you like- Hobbs have £50 off coats at the moment. Have you browsed John Lewis online because they have loads. Or even Boden?

Hobbs was a touch pricey. The coat I liked in Boden (Eliza) had the curse of the poppers.

Off to browse John Lewis..

&Other Stories, too - very thick wool coats. The Uniqlo ones, for eg, are much lighter.

Does anyone know how warm Cos coats are. This is lovely - has anyone seen it in the flesh? Does it look like it would be warm?

Lovely coat

& Other Stories has lovely coats, but the ones I like all seem to be sold out in the smallest size, curses!

You can but try it. It says 'warm' in the description, it's wool mix and lined so I would expect so. My Cos coat is wool mix and unlined and not hugely warm but like you I mainly wear it for work over jackets etc and it's fine, I didn't want something bulky and it's just right.

This is mine - it comes to below my knees though and I'm 5'6" so that model must be very tall. Cos sizing is a bit bonkers too - mine is a 36 and I'm usually a 10, not sure if all their coats are as oversized though.

Argh sorry I meant a 34. Sorry for multiple posts.

It sounds like Cos might size up big, which is now good for me - I suspect I may need to go to a petite range not to be swamped, but then the choice is so limited.

The precis petite looks nice, but not as stylish. hmmmm.

Sorry, I meant big is not good for me - I am small framed.

Hi - I bought the Cos coat after seeing EveWornOut in it. I'm 5ft and got the 34 - it fits well on shoulders and arm length for me and sits above my knees.

It is a really lovely coat.

How heavy/warm would you say it is?

And if you don't mind me asking, what clothes size do you take??

Thank you!!

Thank you for finding those, good finds but they don't hit the spot (oh dear, I am so fussy)

I don't like the navy one - I think I prefer straighter, cleaner lines. The grey/camel coat is lovely, but it has those wretched poppers, which I really dislike.

Why is it so hard to find a petite wool coat, unfussy straight lines, neutral colour, no poppers?

Well it hasn't been cold enough to wear it yet. However I would say it is a normal/warm wool coat but when it is really cold I will wear either my down coat or parka thing.

I'm a size 8 generally with fairly narrow shoulders.

Thing about coats and commuting is that you get freeeezing on the walk to the station and standing on the platform so need something v warm and not draughty...
But then the train is hot and stuffy and generally gross so you need something lighter.
I tend to go for the warmth and then remove coat on the train

Have you tried Jaeger Outlet? Bought a black funnel neck coat for £75 last week. Get the XS as they come up really big.

I have just popped back to thank bettykt for the Jaegar Outlet tip. I ended up ordering this: lovely coat

As you warned they come up big I ordered a 6 instead of my usual 8 (they stock size 6, yay) & it was half sale price for reasons I don't understand & only £75!!! It arrived today & it is perfect.

Three cheers for Mumsnet S&B Smile
