What's so good about J.Crew?

Just got a fancy brochure and it gave me a free code. I did a fantasy shop and it turns out the free code gave me free shipping which was worth £50 Shock seriously? It's usa postage cost yet the site only let's you order from the uk site which has half the us stock at double US prices. Is it worth it?

Only in the sales. Fortunately, or not, I'm in the USA and regularly get 25-40% discount codes. Even better when the codes work on already in sale stock. I find their stuff good quality and I like the preppy style but can't afford it at full price.

Has it always been so expensive? The children's close look lovely but who can pay those prices?

Also, I wonder why we don't get the codes in the uk? I logged onto the USA site and straight away they gave a 30% off code. I tried to fool it and changed to uk site but it wasn't having any of it!

I think they have always been expensive, they're the higher end of the high street. Maybe they don't offer codes in the uk yet as they are trying to be a "desirable" brand first. I find here in nth America the sales and discounts are constant and are probably what the clothes should be priced at in the first place. For instance I never pay full price in banana republic. Although I've had less discounts from them in the us than I received in canada strangely.

Yep, know what you mean. I got a catalogue and quite fancied some of their trousers. But £225? I could get some tailored for me at that price.

I like J Crew as they often seem to do classic clothes "just right" eg tops that fit well, suiting that is wool and available in various cuts. Also, the often do the same pieces, in different colours for each season. So, you can continue to buy variations of what you know. Like Boden, but more interesting.

However, the pricing is, at best, steep and, at worst, absurd. So, if the pricing mirrored the US pricing, I'd buy more.

I only buy J Crew and J Crew Factory when I am in the US. Their cashmere lasts forever and in the sales you can get it at a really good price.

belinda why o why did u go and compare j crew to Boden! You've killed it for me now!

Their cashmere is good, I have a lovely grey one That adore,

AndThey do great basic tees too,

I've been to the regent street store about two times and was really shocked at how expensive it is in the uk, tbh they are still considered high street, they do have a main pricy collection, but the rest of their designs are within high street prices in U.S,

When you get codes in the US can you use them in the actual shops or just online? I'm planning a trip next year.

Their skinny cords are amazing and I got a fantastic cashmere hoodie from there that was my staple last winter, plus a shrunken boyfriend blazer that is great. Also love their shoes- the pointed toe flats in particular. I think the quality and the cut is much better than high street average, so am prepared to spend for some key items. I think their "collection" items are just crazy though.

Collection is crazy in terms of pricing, that is.

SofaCanary · 21/09/2014 15:11

The shrunken boy blazer is on sale at the moment for £118, only the regular option though not the petite or tall version.

I got a couple of pairs of shorts at the end of the UK sale, and paid about £20-£25 each for good quality, great cut, so I felt that was worth it. Otherwise, I look in the US, but actually, there's a massive amount more choice for that preppy style in the US at all price points, so I rarely buy much there (although usually pick some stuff up in Factory, although the quality's not as good as mainline).

Coats, cashmere and suits are fab. I only buy on sale or NWT on EBay.

I think it's hugely overpriced for 'staples'. If I buy anything it's in the US. I object to the fact they charge so much more in the UK

JCrew is very comparable to Boden, I think. They're both Mum stores, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I have a JCrew very close by and a JCrew Factory within a quick drive and it's crazy how different the quality between the two has got. I wouldn't touch JCrew Factory with a barge pole anymore, as it still isn't cheap and the quality is crap.

Nothing IMO. overpriced and over hyped.

I like it but wait for codes, they often do one that does work for the UK. Agree their cashmere is very good and also their shoes.

I got a pair of the everly shoes in the sale with a further 20% off and they compare in quality to way more expensive brands.

The children's stuff also very good but again wait for the sales.

HermioneWeasley · 21/09/2014 18:01

I've had a few bits from there and the quality is really good

Over hyped, I wanted to like it but a few trips in the Regent St store and I was underwhelmed.

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 21/09/2014 18:05

The regent st store is underwhelming - but the online service is excellent. Brilliant customer service in my experience.

God DD an amethyst velvet jacket for £40 reduced from over £150 in the sales last christmas and also cashmere cardigan for £30.

I like J Crew but it's way too expensive here and I don't like the difference in prices between UK and US as it feels like I'm being ripped off.
I tend to look to J Crew for inspiration and then buy similar staples from Gap, Boden and Banana Republic which are more affordable for me.

I didn't realise how expensive it is in the UK but did buy quite a lot in America in the summer. I was there during the sales and it was a really great price. Agree with the poster above that their factory line is hugely inferior - much better to get the real deal when they have a sale. It is a bit Boden-y, but that is good for me!

I know this is an old thread but am I right in thinking that the UK site is more expensive and never has the codes that the US one does. I just emailed them today and they won't let you ship from the US site now even if you pay the duties and shipping. I have scoured the internet for a UK code for weeks but nothing. It's much more expensive with less stock choice. I would love to know what their sales figures are like...strong I presume to take this tack here.

Has anyone else managed to ship from the US since the UK launch?
