Talk to me about pants! The underwear type, not trousers

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2014 16:40

I have been trying to buy some pants/knickers/kex/underpants that are not

  • skimpy
  • lacy
  • flimsy
  • flowery
  • covered in bows
  • microfibre/other synthetic, but a glug of Lycra is fine

I guess what I want is Sloggis with a bit of a pattern. Gap have managed to fill this er, gap, for years, but have gone all lacy.

I am 43, a bit chubby and have 2 young DC. I don't want pulling pants, just not boring, slightly sensible, natural fibre, everyday pants.

I like the Gap ultra low girl shorts. Cotton with minimal elastane. I get a size up as I dont want them that low cut. M&S do cotton rich low rise shorts which are very similar - sadly the Gap ones have proved better quality. Both types good for avoiding VPL

Just been in Gap and all the pants were massively lacy. Gap have been my go-to pant shop for yearsSad

Sorry, hit return, was going to say that I sell children's versions at //www.uniandjack.co.uk and some like the polkadot and blueberries are now available in grown up sizes though I don't know if anyone is selling them in the UK

I like the French brand Dim.

The quality is excellent. I buy the pack of three 'Les Pockets Coton' in French supermarkets.

I am not sure if you can find the brand in the UK easily though...

I wish I could find something as comfortable as sloggis. La redoute sell dim so perhaps I should try them.

Lucked, I haven't bought any Sloggi knickers recently but I think the Dim quality is as good as Sloggi. My Dim knickers last years: admittedly, I have plenty to rotate. Wink

Just a couple of things to be aware of: vanity sizing has passed them by, and their range of sizes is limited. Each Dim size also covers two sizes.

I am a size 10 in M&S and wear Dim size 40-42. I think I am really a size 42 so the knickers are a touch small but they stretch and fit me fine.

Their sizes are 36-38, 40-42 and 44-46. Based on my experience, I suspect that the 44-46 would be a size 12-14 in M&S. They don't seem to cater for bigger sizes than that.

Marking place! Bought a pile of m&s underpants last autumn and they have wornincredibly badly Shock holes and everything!!! Have never owned sloggis but am considering them. Also hate too many flowers and patterns...

Ooh, thank you for the DIM recommendation. My sister lives in France so she could send me some. Not sure I want her to know i'm a 46!

Bike, definitely make use of your sister!
It should be no massive hardship for her as all big French supermarkets sell them. They also sell the Dim shorties. I think they are also called the 'Dim pockets' i.e. a pack of three.

Occasionally, they have offers where there is an extra pair of knickers for free in the pack.

I would recommend your just getting a pack via your sister to test the quality and the size. If you tell her the colours you may like (e.g. blue, red, orange, grey...), there should be some options in the shops that fit your requirements.

If you get some, let me know how you get on.

Finding suitable knickers is my holy grail.

Size 16 with an overhang belly (nice eh??) All my knickers roll down under my belly every time I bend down :-(

bibpatandigglepiggle me too! I've tried loads and they all roll down. I am typical apple shape with no bum which doesn't help.

Awful, no, just because Dim is sold in supermarkets does not mean it is cheap but the quality is great.

Having said that, I bought some Tu underwear in Sainsbury's in 2000 and the knickers are still in perfect condition. I bought some plain white cotton knickers there earlier this year and I tore a hole in a pair the first time I wore it, and they look like granny pants too. Shock

The only thing about getting stuff from La Redoute is that they don't seem to stock the nicest (in my opinion) Dim knickers. La Redoute has also got a dire reputation.

M&s do packs of plain pants. I like the no vpl ranges. They are just plain cotton or modal depending on which ones you choose. Ultimately I love the full briefs Blush but I do buy the Brazilian and the thong back ones for variation.

I brought sainsburys knickers on recommendation here and the multi packs were rubbish fell apart and were massive. I downsized to an 8 and I'm a good 12. Some of the individual sainsburys pants have been fine but they are mainly silky or lacy or both!

I end up buying cheapo cotton pants from tesco which ain't pretty and don't last because nice pants so often either dig in or roll down or ride up my arse. I'm wide of hip, curvy of bum and wobbly of belly. I'd assume those marisota pants would be better than usual high st options but at £16 a pair I'm scared to take a risk! I've bought so many pants and binned them after one wear because they are horrible.

Buy mine from Matalan. Much better quality than expected for the price. Don't think M &S are good value anymore. I'm slim but I can't bear anything riding/slicing up my arse cheeks.

Well I've found //Bond's on the John Lewis website. Also 2 pairs of white Sloggi shorties.

A couple of pairs of the Maxomorra ones linked above (love these!, thank you Help)

And a box of Seasalt Nauti Knickers

Can't believe how much I've just spent on pants! They'd better not go all saggy and baggy after 3 washes!!

"They are just plain cotton or modal depending on which ones you choose."

The M & S no VPL ones aren't pure cotton any more. They are modal (whatever that is) with a cotton gusset.

I've found supermarket (Sainsbos or Asda) minis (not thongs or shorts) to be surprisingly good.

As as very cheap, worth a try.
