What does a 50 year old frump wear to a swanky nightclub?

We've just received an invitation to a birthday party at club; cocktails, dinner & dancing.
Am I right in thinking my usual cotton Boden shift won't be right? I haven't been to a club for years & haven't a clue.
What do the cool metropolitan set wear? Please don't make me mutton Grin

I would wear a black dress. Glam up the make up.

Thanks MrsG I can do LBT. I so don't want to look like a hick from the sticks, which I am.

Def one block colour and try some really bright sandals high or low or silver , make sure your hair is gorgeous and don't worry too much about makeup but go for a stand out lipstick.

That dress is gorgeous, no need to look frumpy , I know loads of fifty something's who look far more amazing than they did at thirty.

See I'm 50, and I never ever wear black. I think it's ageing and safe. Find a color that suits you and wear that

But what if I turn up dressed for a Christmas party & they're all in leather hot pants or whatever fashionistas wear these days?

Both dresses sound lovely but probably a bit too formal, is somewhat provical to overdress for a night on the tiles TBH. What's your height, size and shape?

Report
MrsLettuce · 31/07/2014 20:26

yy, exactly, that's the risk with such a dress!

I'm 5'9", size 12. Minimal bust, middle-aged spare tyre, decent legs.
I have a gorgeous pair of tan, block heeled sandals.

Can you ask someone else who is going what they're wearing so you can get a feel for the dress code? Someone who dresses well, of course. That dress, whilst lovely, does look very dressy and that might not be right?

What is your colouring?

Report
rhubarbcrumbleplease · 31/07/2014 20:35

I don't know anyone else, it's a work mate of DH. I suspect most will be similar ages.
I've got brown highlighted hair & olive skin.

That dress is very short MrsLettuce, I've got a 35" inside leg and my knees are not attractive.

Oh I disagree it looks very unflattering to me. You're on the right track op. Just wear something that suits you and you'll be fine. It's dark inside clubs ;)
