sheer tights with a short leather skirt

Hi,
Advice please.
I recently met up with 3 of my former school friends for lunch and then an afternoons retail therapy in Oxford Street and Knightsbridge.
As the weather was quite warm, i opted for a skirt rather than trousers and jeans. I chose a black leather look mini and white blouse. Black sheer tights (15 denier) as it was just nice to escape from months of opaque winter tights. I teamed it with simple black courts as i knew we would be doing quite a lot of walking around shops.
In the evening when we were having a drink in a pub, one of my friends said they couldnt believe that i would wear sheer tights with a mini skirt. I asked why and 2 of them said it is a fashion dont do and looks cheap and tarty !
My other friend later told me i looked nice and she thought my outfit looked cool.I was quite taken back by their comments as i had often dressed this way without any negative comments. Any advice please ? Is sheer tights with a mini skirt really a no no, or were they just bitching about my outfit ?
.

I'll be honest. Court shoes, fifteen denier tights (barely black?) and a white blouse sounds...very Liz Mc Donald from corrie. Or like the waitresses from " 'allo 'allo "

Very eighties 'sexy Secretary'

Sorry Op.

When you say courts do you mean high heels like these? Or flats?

If they were high heels it may have looked a little trashy. As a look with the sheer tights, I would say it's a bit dated. Sorry, op. But I think the skirt would look nice without tights and with flats.

Well your friend sounds like a right cow, regardless of what you looked like. What was she wearing?

I don't agree with sheer tights anyway, it's all or nothing!

But yes, bit of a dick for pointedly bringing it up

Honestly I probably would have thought the same thing but would never have commented.

That is just twattish.

sounds ok. I think tights are better than bare legs. Very rude of them to comment at all IMO. You were happy. You could argue it was a vintage look :)

All depends on the skirt, shirt and shoes!

I prefer thick black tights with a short skirt- but I appreciate what you're saying about the weather!

I'd need a photo to make a proper judgement.

However- telling you that in a 'telling you off' way? Not cool.

Very rude of them to say anything... but as you are asking here, my first thought was "god, she must have looked like a prostitute."

First thought is that it sounds a bit tarty and dated. I personally don't like sheer black tights.
I also thought that it's not a comfy shopping outfit! I'd never wear heels for a full days shopping.

It was very rude of this person to comment on your outfit though.

I have worn similar outfit so many times before and never realised.
I rarely go without tights as i have a scar on my leg, and shoes were flat due to walking we were going to do.
Just didnt realise. Thanks for all of your help and advice.
Am now horrified and defo wont wear outfit again !

It's the sort of outfit I might wear to a certain sort of party (& did fairly recently to a really OTT Christmas do hosted by a flamboyant gay couple except my top was red & the tights were lacy).

I personally wouldn't wear sheer tights with a mini skirt in the daytime.

Don't worry Smile I have form for inappropriate dressing! Very bitchy of them to mention it though.

If you liked it thats all that matters

If you felt good in what you were wearing it's such a shame for people to ruin that. It doesn't sound like a horror-inducing outfit to me.

I think the way they went about it wasn't very nice but on the other hand your reaction tells me that you actually appreciate knowing that perhaps it's not the best look. They did you a favour in the end.

But don't waste time cringing. I'm sure no one who saw you even remembers it now Smile

Next time you want to wear a similar outfit you'll be able to make an informed choice about what general impression you'll be making.

I do appreciate my friends advice, and all the advice people have given me here.
I just didnt realise that it was such a taboo combination !

It's only a taboo if you are concerned not to make the 'wrong' impression on what's probably the majority of people you come across. Plenty of people won't notice or care, even if they might be in the minority.

If you're happy dressing that way and not too bothered about what people think, then don't change it. It only matters if it matters to you.

Your friend sounds like a right cow! And your outfit sounds fine to me.

As others have said, it's how you feel about it that matters. You've probably had your confidence knocked now. Don't let that happen.

What was your oh-so-stylish friend wearing? Was she perhaps jealous?

I think perhaps the tights hit the wrong note. as said up thread, it tends to be all or nothing

From a practical point of view, if you you feel a bit self conscious about your scar, perhaps a bit of leg make-up to hide it?
