Clothing with an age limit

At what age does it stop being acceptable to wear shorts with tights? Or leggings? Or converse? Is there any clothing with an age limit?

I'm 35 and still wearing them. I think if you've got good legs and style it right, there doesn't need to be an age limit.

I think attitude has more to do with it than age. I'll consider anything but I'd feel utterly ridiculous in a shorts play suit. I'm 45.

All of the above I wear and can't see changing for a while (I'm 32) I do however think Neon clothing of any description only belongs to preteen girls.

As for clothes with an age limit, I agree with Hadley Freeman that anything designed for toddlers should not be worn by grown women - so mittens, animal hats, onesies. Other than that I think it's more a matter of what suits you than how old you are.

You can and should wear what takes your fancy. The skinny jeans and a scarf uniform suits hardly anyone in my opinion. But dressing like a teenager does say something about you, like it or not.

I reckon skater skirts look a bit daft on over 20s - just my opinion though.

I personally draw the line at cartoon characters. That's it.

Kikithecat - How very dare you! I am 54 and wear them!

Sorry Death I bet you look great in yours! Generalisation obviously.

I don't think there's an age limit on anything really.

I don't wear shorts with tights or leggings at 39, but that's because that kind of outfit doesn't suit me and is not my taste, nothing to do with my age.

Although I do avoid anything my pre-teen or my mother wears Wink

as noted, if it is designed for toddlers then it should not be on an adult.
so that is babygros, hats with ears, animal prints and so on.

Otherwise, if it suits you, wear it.

This one pops up a lot in here doesn't it? I wear shorts, playsuits and tights quite a lot. I like the look. Am mid forties.

I wore shorts (knee-length) over my running tights with ankle boots and a cotton sweater for my Pilates class last week, and it was a much-admired look. I am 57 and about the youngest of my class, so make of that what you will! It felt pleasantly springlike!

I'm 44. I wear shorts with tights; I wear Converse; I wear mini skirts - leggings are strictly for in-house slobbing though. I think it's more to do with how things are worn, than the things themselves. A skirt with bare legs and cheap looking high heels looks far worse than shorts, opaques and ankle boots, for example, whatever the age.

I saw a stylish lady in denim shorts and tights in Soho the other week. She was (likely) in her 40s and looked great. I've seen some teenage girls in the same outfit look...not so great.

Converse are a middle aged item of clothing aren't they? My DH lives in his.

As 50Shades says, the 'too old for X' theme is quite a frequent one on here.

I don't think there is an age limit on most things. Although there is a lady round here in her sixties who wears tight leather trousers and matching waistcoat which I do find myself thinking WTF.

Personally I don't think anyone should ever shorts and tights either it is warm enouhh for shorts or its not IMHO.

I really don't understand why some people have a problem with this. If you enjoy fashion, then part of the fun is trying out new things and taking risks. Older women have as much right to do this as anyone else.

Heh, I'm 28 and was worrying slightly that i might be too old for my shorts and tights. But obviously not!

I think if you take care of yourself and style yourself well, very few items of clothing have an age limit.

Surely the answer should be so long as you LOOK GOOD and FEEL GOOD in them? I don't think to is to do with age per se... My legs are pretty good, but I have never felt confident about wearing above the knee skirts to show them off.

I saw a 60+ woman with a black sheer blouse & a bright pink bra on in town once. She looked awful.

So she was wearing a sheer blouse and a bright pink bra but you think it was just her age that made her look awful? Grin

Agree with FeelingLostJess

LostMyPants I've got 20 years on you and have just rediscovered shorts and opaque tights and am loving them. Will almost feel sad when the weather gets too warm.

And the reason for shorts with tights is that my legs are long and shapely but I've never had nice smooth tanned skin on my legs and now they also need a bit of lycra to make up for loss of skin tone (and weird knee fat). So, I'd never wear shorts or a short skirt with bare legs but I like to show my legs off all the same as they're one of my best features.

no it just didnt look good on her as it wouldn't on me & I am 38. I don't like the underwear on display look on anybody regardless of age.
