Correct attire for a day at the races

Am I missing something here?
www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2596282/Glamorous-revellers-pull-stops-vie-title-best-dressed-racegoer-10-000-Caribbean-holiday-Ladies-Day-Aintree.html
Presumably there are hundreds of ladies wearing really nice classy outfits but the Daily Heil just chooses not to photograph them?
Or is Aintree the land of undusted mirrors?

It is almost a sacred tradition with the Mail. Point and laugh at the women attending Aintree. Take no notice.

Their usual misogynistic shite...

I noticed that this year they've made the captions really flattering so nobody can accuse them of being mean, safe in the knowledge that the comments sections will do all the bitching for them.

So, do other papers cover the really nice outfits?
Genuine question.
I used to go to Henley and know that there are some lovely outfits that never make it into the press.

I've only been to the races once in my life but surely the whole point is to dress up, have a laugh and yes, look a bit ridiculous? I know I did and I had a great time! There are 364 other days in the year for looking classy.

(Did I just side with the Daily Mail there? Shock)

I never usually look at these articles as I have very little fashion sense or interest. But something about this one made me look at every picture.

I wondered the same as you OP . Surely there must have been some stylishly dressed women attending. And if so where can I see them ?

I hate the Daily Mail and that's all I have to say on the matter. I can't be bothered to look at the pictures.

Having just looked at some other websites without an axe to grind, there are a few really nice outfits, but not many
metro.co.uk/2014/04/03/ladies-under-starters-order-for-the-fashion-stakes-at-aintree-grand-national-4687657/
even the supportive local rag
www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/ladies-day-aintree-pictures-2014-6919706
has a few of the clangers in it ....

am rather embarrassed to admit that I think Coleen Rooney's outfit is not bad at all

But like I said, surely OTT is perfectly 'correct attire' for the races? It's not like going to a wedding or a job interview. You get dressed up like a dog's dinner, let your hair down and have a bloody good time.

Don't you?

TalkinPeace · 04/04/2014 18:19

I guess I'm comparing it with things like Henley and Goodwood : OTT but in a way to make people go WOW not OOF

I don't agree Talkinpeace. I don't think looking classy or even stylish is particularly the point. But maybe I went to the wrong races Grin

OTT is probably ok but surely in clothes that actually fit you and that you're somewhat comfortable in?

Floisme · 04/04/2014 18:29

I think these women know exactly what they're doing. They are perfectly aware that they probably look a bit silly and they don't give a toss. I say good for them.

A local event that had a ladies day ....

I know most of the ladies in the pictures - and they would agree with capet flashy but such that it fits and you do not get papped with your shoes off

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, TalkinPeace. I know what you're saying and in any other situation, I would probably be gawping along with you. It's just about context. And no disrespect to Southampton ladies but, if I had to choose between a day at Aintree or the Boat Show, I know where I'd rather be Grin

TalkingPeace I think the best thing (and like I said, I've only been once) was it wasn't just young, pretty or thin women dressing up like that. Everyone did it. Everyone looked ridiculous. Nobody cared!

But I agree, you might not want too many photos getting out Grin

I'd forgotten that it's the DM's annual sneering festival this week.

How dare these northern people go out and enjoy themselves, aping their betters at Royal Ascot!

I am convinced that some Aintree race goers overdo the tan & garish frock thing just for a laugh and to annoy po-faced newspapers. I would. The girl with the hat made of mini cheddars was a heroine!

There are, of course, plenty of beautifully-dressed people at Aintree. We just don't get to see many of them in photos.

Twinklestein · 05/04/2014 11:18

I have no idea why anyone would want to look like that whether for a joke or a dare...

Report
brettgirl2 · 05/04/2014 12:19

its not about sneering is about the fact that 90% of the women at Aintree will on fact be dressed casually.

People think royal ascot is 'going to the races' in fact it is highly unusual in the racing calendar. The point of going to the races isn't 'dressing up' for most people!

The number of times I've been and a couple of people turn up dressed up looking around in horror at everyone in jeans and t-shirts.

Report
Financeprincess · 05/04/2014 12:30

Sorry, Brettsgirl, but the DM's coverage of Aintree racing is all about sneering.

The two they have chosen as stylish examples do look great. It's a game for everyone else, surely, dressing up as drama. I hope they feel ok about being in the pics rather than upset. Do they have to ok printing.

Dear all women

Only wear straps around your ankles if they are dainty little ankles.

Cankles and straps should never need
