UK staycation July by the sea -what to take?

Uk holiday planned beside the seaside will be doing some walking and cycling- have kit for that but other than jeans and t-shirts bit unsure what to take - will be eating out every night casual dress and wedges will suffice I guess.

Any ideas for day time I don't suit crop trousers I am thinking layers- and probably need a waterproof light weight jacket?

Any suggestions with linkys gratefully received...

Whatever you would normally wear,plus stuff for the beach and anything required for specific things (like activities).

That said,I holiday in the UK every year,in August, (Haven and despite what some say it is far from chavvy or slumming it....I even have a full en suite bathroom and walk in wardrobe in my caravan) and take shed loads of clothes because it's nice to feel so relaxed that you feel fab wearing whatever you want!

I tend to take a couple of maxi dresses,couple shorter dresses,leggings,jeans,capris,white linen trousers (fab done the right way!),few (ok,several) tops,couple of tankinis,pair of flip flops,pair of sandals,pair of closed toe shoes for if the weather changes and a pair of more sensible shoes for stuff like long walks,theme/adventure parks,farm parks etc,a couple of cardis (including a light snuggly one for breezes evenings by the sea) and a lightweight waterproof jacket.

Obviously underwear in there aswell,but you get the gist!Just take a few bits for different activities and weather and you're set.

Oh,as for the jacket.The Rosanne Jacket at Fatface seems quite popular,air was put off my the middle aged ladies trying it on though!I'm tempted by the coated duffle style in matalan at the moment.Even has an adjustable waist for nipping in and looks kinda cute in real life (not so much on the website) especially in the kinda overflowed blue colour

I would add a warm jersey type top for cliff top walks and breezy days on the beach.

fleece is the best thing for layering, although it isn't windproof so you need that lightweight waterproof on top. Not sweatshirts, not jeans for anything active - fine for evenings of course.

and a LOT of suncream. If you get lucky with the weather (as last year), rash vest and boardshorts for swimming for ages in a warm sea. I did, on a beach in North Wales. It can happen!

Wait until about 5 days before you go. Look at weather forecast. Could be 10C or 30C!

There is no need on earth for a fleece.Particularly in summer!

I wouldn't plan it now, to be honest. We went to british beach last year. Weather was totally gorgeous. The thing I wished I'd taken was a waterproof jacket and shoes which can handle rain, as it did tip it down one day and I had open toed shoes only and nothing for rain. (Yes, it was a great summer, very hot and I was unprepared!). Everything else was just my normal stuff. It's not a fashion show!

Fleece and waterproofs,long sleeved jersey tops and jumpers for evenings. 2 weeks in Cornwall and I didn't wear anything else in July.Never again.

2012 - weather rubbish everywhere though.Dressing gowns always get packed however bulky for evenings and mornings of slobbing out.

Isn't a staycation when you stay at home? We are holidaying in the UK by the sea in July, but to me it is as much of a holiday as a trip abroad.

In answer to your question. I intend to take a pair of shorts a pair of linen trousers and my chinos, plus a couple of dresses. I will also take a couple of cardigans and a waterproof coat.

Erm, you obviously haven't had to put up with some of the crap weather we have had over recent years. In July 2012 we had torrential rain and struggled to reach 12 degrees some days.

The same as most people on this board.Although this is all light hearted.

The point is though that a fleece is not 'needed' nor 'the best thing for layering'.'Tis a style and beauty board.I also often think I live in a different country to some posters!

Fleeces are ace for walking along beaches in the evening. Or packing as a layer of Cliff top waddling etc. You'll find you won't be the only one once you're out walking!

UK in summer? Take everything you own. You need to cover rain, heatwave, sleet, howling gales, risk of flooding (full length waders best for this), fog and mild cloudy weather. On top of this you need everything for the beach, country walks, meals out at all kinds of venues and any activities you might plan. If you have children you need binoculars to see them on busy beaches and possibly a length of elastic so they don't stray too far. Definitely a loud hailer for when they leg it into massive waves outside the lifeguarded zone.
Actually I too am of the wait until a week or so before you go, check the forecast and pack accordingly school of thought. Be a bit pessimistic and pack some washing powder. Always pack lots of shorts for children on beaches whatever the weather...

recognising light-heartedness, but seeing women (because it always seems to be women) in ghastly silly shoes and impractical clothing because they think the practical stuff is unfashionable just makes me want to chain myself to a railing.

you've got the vote. Show that you have the brains to use it. Dress for the weather when outside!!

I always like to go for the nautical look on seaside hols so lots of navy, white/ecru, perhaps a bit of red. Stripy tops, cotton knits, def a waterproof jacket but in navy or possibly light blue so still looks coordinated. Think Ile de Re or French coastal resort (Brittany though not Côte d'Azur!). I stick to a strict colour palette so everything goes together for layering purposes (and you may need to wear them all even in July!). I would agree that fleece is never a good look, but ever there was a time to wear one it is on a breezy beach or cliff top walk.

Many years ago OH and I went to the High Force waterfall in county Durham. To get there you had to walk along a rocky path. I saw a woman teetering along in stilettos!!! Unbelievable.

These fashionistas don't realise how silly they look when wearing inappropriate clothing for the terrain or the weather.
