Flaking, splitting fingernails - look a state. Products?

My nails have started flaking off, a small chunk of the top layer sort of chips off, and then the nail edge is weak and it eventually breaks, or I nibble it in irritation. Have no idea why they're flaking. Anyone know of a product to put on that will strengthen them? They look awful at the moment!

OPR Nail Envy, stops you picking at them. Put on two coats, miss a day and then another coat and continue like this for 1 week. Then take all off and start again.

Effect is like clear varnish and it doesnt peel off

Try Amazon for Nail Envy - better than Boots

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/03/2014 19:26

Rub Vaseline onto them everyday. In 4 days you will see a huge improvement.

There was a thread reverently, amazing that it works so well.

minxthemanx · 25/03/2014 19:27

Wow thanks for the quick responses! Fab, will dig out the Vaseline tonight and get on to Amazon.

Try zinc, 30mg a day for a couple of months.

BelleateSebastian · 25/03/2014 19:36

qvc sells nail envy and the avoplex oil in twin packs - both amazing

WhoNickedMyName · 25/03/2014 19:54

Nail envy made my nails ten times worse.

Try Vaseline or L'Occitane nail and cuticle cream. Worked wonders for me.

geordiepidge · 25/03/2014 20:02

Nail Envy made mine worse too. Nailtiques Formule 2 is the business for flaky nails.

Malva scientific via amazon .
I have the softest nails ever that just sort of peel .
This bonds the layers of the nails together . I have white tips now and they are not peeling.you apply to tip only. .
Look up on u tube? I saw a woman using it and she also added a nail strengthenedr to nor ish to help growth.
Only thing that has ever worked for me !

wash your hands well after you use remover. Rub castor or Vaseline in every few days. Cheap and v effective

ihatethecold · 25/03/2014 20:22

I had nail envy and avoplex,
Can't say they did any thing to my nails.
Olive oil is probably just as good

annabelcaramel · 25/03/2014 20:23

Also, check out you are getting enough iron. Anaemia affects your nails

PoisonedApple · 25/03/2014 20:24

Nail magic from john Lewis - it looks really cheap but really works!

chutneypig · 25/03/2014 20:28

There was a very recent thread on using Vaseline. The difference it's made with my nails in a few days has been amazing. I never normally have problems with my nails but recently had the problems you described.its definitely helping.

Justgotosleepnow · 25/03/2014 20:33

Look at your diet, is your hair prone to breaking/ split ends?
You might need more protein in your diet. Plus omega oils plus iron.

Squeegle · 25/03/2014 20:42

Mavala scientifique
It is nothing short of a miracle
My nails are soft and peel after years of nail biting. You use a very small amount - it's not like a nail hardener, it changes the texture of your nails and makes them hard and not likely to break. It's expensive but lasts for ages- I've had one bottle for about 3 years.

splodgeness · 26/03/2014 14:25

Mine have been like this for the last two years, dreadful. I tried the OPI stuff and Mavala with little effect. Rubbing oil or vaseline or any kind of moisturiser did help quite a lot.

But now I have found out I have a chronic Iron deficiency and that causes weak and flaky nails. Perhaps it is worth trying a supplement to fix the cause of the problem?

Whatfun · 26/03/2014 17:37

My nails were just like Yours. A friend with beautiful nails and hands gave me a little bottle of Solar oil and a Leighton Denny crystal nail file.

I have used the solar oil every night since. My nails are healthy and strong. They are the best they have ever been.
Solar oil is cheap and lasts for ages. You can get it on Amazon and eBay.

Olive oil

Sally jenson in boots do good products for damaged nails

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/03/2014 17:45

vaseline is working wonders for me too.

teenybash7 · 26/03/2014 18:19

Nailtiques Formula 2 plus - if I was cast on to a desert island with only one beauty product this would be it! I buy it from beauty bay on line (about £10). Rescued my dreadful nails when I was despairing and had resorted to super glueing them!

I also heard that biotin is good so I take a multi-vitamin supplement which contains it from Tesco or Morrison's.

I've been using This for about a week with, so far, very good results. Got mine at the supermarket.

My nails were weak and broken and very short; now looking much much better.

RosettaScone · 26/03/2014 21:47

I have been dying for someone to ask this question because my nails have been transformed almost immediately by Rimmel Nail Nurse Rescue (about £4.50).

One coat on day one, then another on day two. Remove on day 7 and repeat. My nails are so solid now!

teenybash7 · 27/03/2014 07:30

Interesting Rosetta! Rimmel Nail Nurse Rescue - same regime as Nailtiques, (except 7 days instead of 5) but half the price!

Should I risk trying it for a few weeks at the end of my current bottle of Nailtiques? Big decision!
