Anna Wintour lost the plot

On putting Kim kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of Vogue.

"'Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it.
I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?)

'As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue’s cover.
He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.

'There’s barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian Wests haven’t been able to master, and for good reason: Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that."

.........

I bought every copy of Vogue from 1980 until 1995 and then two or three a year and now the occasional copy, maybe one a year. I always buy one for my friend at Christmas. I loved it, absolutely loved it back in the 1980s/90s.

Hilarious that it has now come to Kim kardashian being on the cover, quite possibly the worst dressed woman ever, who came to fame through a sex tape and her father's name.

Now I know I will never buy it again as it's sunk so low!

The cover photo taken by Annie Leibovitz is awful, Kim's hands look huge and mannish.

Kim's hands don't look man-ish, your perception of a normal woman is clearly warped after reading Vogue for so long!

I completely disagree, I have read vogue since I was a little girl. My Mum, Granny and various Aunts are all avid readers and I love the cover.

Anna Wintour has made a shrewd decision as this cover will sell worldwide and will most probably have to be reprinted, whether you like Kanye and Kim their ability to make headlines from one Instagram photo or stepping out in Paris or New York is undeniable. They are relevant right now and that is what American Vogue is all about ultimately. Anna wants to tap into whats hot when its hot. I only read American, British and French Vogue but out of those Vogue Paris is probably the only 'true' fashion vogue now.

Seeing Kim in Lanvin and Mcqueen has made me want to marry my husband again.

I didn't say her hands are large and mannish. Kim is petite (except for her derrière), the way her hands are in the forefront makes them look wider and bigger than what they are.

It's not a flattering photo.

I agree Sunday.
Kanye West is NOT what I consider iconic.
I suppose KK is beautiful, and that is what Vogue is about, but their relationship just seems so publicity obsessed. Distasteful I suppose.

I love vogue and have both uk and us on subscription - I also have a guilty love of the Khardashians so am looking forward to my issue arriving.

I also think that Kim is very beautiful and presumably she sells so I don't see why its a bad choice really - I bet it will be a commercial succes.

I'm sorry puddles but I hardly think anyone finds Kim style interesting ,or fashionable, and I don't think you will find people are anticipating her every move,I never heard anyone in paris talks about her.

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/03/2014 19:27

People do find Kim and Kanye interesting - they may not talk about it in public though Wink And especially not in Paris.

You said they look mannish but to me they don't!

I'm probably not a target Vogue reader but I think they look nice and Kim doesn't look like a stick unlike some of their other models (which I know is what fashion is about so the clothes hang right etc but I personally don't like that)

Paris, Texas maybe but not Paris, France!

It is a sign of the times when celebrity for celebrity sake is revered over talent and good taste. I am referring to Kim, not kanye, although he comes across as a bit of a nob!

I think Kim is extremely beautiful. And while she might not always get it 'right', she is obviously very interested in fashion ad loves clothes. So why not!

santamarianovella I never said people in Paris were talking about her. I actually said that whether they are posting photos to Instagram or stepping out in Paris or New York they are making headlines.

American Vogue has always been more commercial than say Vogue Paris since Wintour started editing it.

But vogue has always done this. Princess Diana on the cover - she was born wealthy and had no talent as such. What's the difference?

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 21/03/2014 19:35

Quite, vogue is all about the celebs nowadays.

Kanye is a massive dick and I have no interest in Kim Kardashian but loads of people do so I imagine that issue will sell very well.

yep, totally. i can't get past the whole sex tape this with kk.

MarshaBrady · 21/03/2014 19:40

It means nothing to me, I don't watch the shows and have only seen KK on links from here. The shot is too coy for me and too long hashtag.

But it will get pr I suppose, sounds like print needs it.

I think the photo is actually quite a good representation of KK. Of course, she is beautiful (ignoring her fashion sense). But the way she gazes out to the photographer as Kanye West is cuddled into her neck shows that 'strength of character' (or whatever you want to call it) that has made her famous. It is a very calculated pose. Always looking to the camera, striking a pose, the intermingling of the public/personal.

Yeap like Beyonce and Jay Z are paragons.

Honestly, they're all celebs with incredibly manufactured images - I don't get the snobbishness about Kim K really. She's pretty and has managed to create a pretty amazing career out of it despite not fitting the 'norms' of beauty.

It's a very poor picture. She is not wearing that dress well. It looks a bit sqiffy on her.

I think it's brilliant. A lot of people were similarly derisive of Victoria Beckham's first Vogue cover(s), but nobody would question it now. I find Kim Kardashian fascinating, and I'm thrilled to see her on the cover of Vogue US. My only irritation is that it takes so long for my subscription to arrive! I'm longing to read the interview, which was done by Hamish Bowles who is BRILLIANT.

marsha I guess, pr is what they are after, they did get a lot of publicity after that Lena Dunham cover, but at least Lena had something to "offer" she has a hit show, and is a filmmaker, who is not the normal Hollywood looking kinda girl,
But I can't find one aspect of KK life that I find interesting,to learn about.

KK isn't the normal looking hollywood girl though is she?

Actually, when I say I have no interest in KK that is not strictly true - her arse absolutely mesmerises me with it's hugeness! Is it real?

I'm not impressed, but I'm not surprised either.
