If you were a 90's indie kid and you're now approaching 40 what do you wear?

I would love to still be wearing docs, leggings and baggy lumberjack shirts, with maybe a mini skirt for clubbing.

Sadly I am 2 stone heavier, 20 years older, haven't been clubbing for 5 years and would look a complete sight!

Can you still have an alternative style as you get older? If you do, what sort of things do you wear and where do you shop?

35 ... combo of vintage (as work requires smart) with -60s/70s twist, tunic tops + leggings, band-tshirts and slogan t-shirts with jeans at weekends... both offer plenty of plaid opportunities .

I still have purpley red hair OF COURSE.

I have found the recent 90s trends bittersweet... yes, I can buy some items and re-live my heyday but some things (cropped fluffy jumpers) make me feel nostalgic and ancient!

Work clothes are a separate problem. I need a complete wardrobe overhaul but I just don't like any clothes in the shops. They all make me feel like my grandma!

Where do you get your vintage stuff? I know there are some great shops locally but it takes a lot of time and patience to track stuff down. Maybe it's time I tried a bit harder.

LOL I'm waay to stubborn and think it's 'the man' (as in society not DH) trying to make older women vanish and become bland!! Bit of girl power there LOL!!
I use charity shops, designer outlets and the high street mainly.
I do shop in next, but not to look next (if that makes sense?) e.g. their flattering jeans + an indie top.

I've tried to adapt the indie look I had in the 90's to suit my age (38) so instead of dms I now have some less bulky black lace up boots and some rather lovely biker boots, (I still don't do shoes) I wear a lot of dresses now instead of skirts, I like ones that flare out above the tummy (to disguise the jelly belly!) with black leggings/tights or over jeans, and more fitted cardigans instead of the 90's baggy ones. I still have lumberjack shirts but again more fitted. I have clothes from Apricot, Dorothy Perkins, Tk Maxx, H&M and the odd Debenhams Mantaray dress (you do have to hunt for the nicer ones amongst the dowdy shaped ones though, some great prints and they look fab over jeans/or with leggings and boots).

I still have a couple of pairs of docs that get an outing sometimes but usually I try to wear more classic stuff. I have a meeting today so I'm wearing a red silk Ralph Lauren top, skinny jeans, camel coat (the cut is quite similar to the grandad coats we all used to wear in the nineties) and a pair of pumps.

This was me! WMy fist concert ever was to see Ride! Oh they were magnificent.

I now wear for casual-
skinnies, rolled chinos, boyf jeans
Breton stripe tops, l/s tops with some interest, like a sheer panel, or fine knit or something. Mostly Zara, h&m,
Converse, Hudson boots, wedge boots, brogues
Leather biker jacket
Barbour coat
Statement necklaces, some wrote cuffs like Stella and dot ones.

Work is a lot of dresses with boyf blazers

Out out is snazzier dresses, leopard print heels.

I have a couple of long tunic tops that I wear over skinny black jeans. They tend to be a bit shapeless and bland though, and I'd like to be a bit more adventurous.

Some really good ideas on this thread though. I'm going to make a real effort to overhaul my look.

shoegazing (LOVE the name!) I still don't do shoes either. I have a pair of Fly Yuna patent black shoes that I wear for work, but I am gradually moving up the food chain at work and I think I need to get something a bit more corporate and grown up looking.

I just can't bear pointy stilettos like my colleagues wear. All I can hear in my head is my auntie saying to me at 18 "Why don't you get yourself a nice pair of court shoes?" as I turned up for yet another family wedding in my cherry docs!!

My boss is very label and fashion conscious and has already made a few comments about office wear. I'm second in command now, and I know she'd like me to be a bit more Kurt Geiger!

I think I might have to just conform to the corporate look and treat it like a uniform. I don't have to like it. It would be nice to be able to have my own style for work but still be smart enough for external meetings though.

i get most of my clothes from Joe Browns catalogue - they do lovely tunic tops, amazing dresses in various styles, lovely knits and cardis and so on, I am addicted! Everything a bit quirky and different

Yep, still in converse and boots :) I do have shoes (somewhere) but I have lovely feet due to never wearing stupid shoes, so not cramming them into anything uncomfortable now!

I'm 35 and still stuck in the 90s if I'm honest so I'll be no help OP .

Work is restrictive re clothing so generally black trousers and jumper. I wear doc style shoes.

Outside of work: hoodies, boyfriend or flared jeans, flared cords, skinny t-shirts (preferably with band or slogan) and in winter long white or black top underneath. I wear cropped slouch style jeans in summer. I still wear my dad's leather jacket from the 60's/early 70's which I acquired when I was a teenager and my long cord coat in winter or an army style khaki jacket in the summer. There is usually some kind of hat involved and stripey scarf in winter.

Going out (rare!!) Flowery wrap round dresses (teamed with boots and tights) or short denim skirt if I can't really wear my normal atire. I'm more of a local pub girl than club/cocktails bar person though.

Shoes are usually converse, docs or biker style boots. I have 2 shoes with high heels with coordinated dresses for weddings/funerals/christenings etc

I just aim to look sexy in a non revealing way. Bare legs in hot pants and page 3 low cut tops look a but desperate at nearly 40. I go for tight jeans, biker and denim jackets, dresses etc. I might not be 20 but my body still looks fine being shown off in a calculated way. My legs are my best asset.

The thing is the lumberjack shirts, docs etc. look wasn't really alternative as loads of young people wore it, it was just the fashion at the time.

I'm 34 and having drifted away from my indie kid style roots over the last six or seven years, I've decided that maternity leave (ie not needing to wear work clothes!) has been a good time to bring a bit of nineties me back....Nowadays the cord flares, band t-shirts and checked shirts have gone, but I'm back in DMs (hooray!!!!), although minus the reggae laces and tippex graffiti, and am wearing a lot of denim skirts and dresses with leggings and thick patterned black tights, plus layered tops and big scarves etc. The odd skater dress too. And a green parka our kid. Long live grown up indie kids
