So out of date, what's fashionable!?

My dh is taking me for a meal at the weekend, my first night out since dd2 was born 6 months ago. Having had 2 babies in less than two years I've not really bought any decent clothes for ages! I live in jeans and tracksuit bottoms but want to look good for going out!

I'm almost 34, size 10-12 and 5'5. I'm going shopping on Friday but have to take the girls so won't have time to browse everywhere! What is fashionable for my age at the moment? Not too smart but not too casual either! Advice please from any fashionistas out there!

Boyfriend jeans (or trousers) with some kind of heels and a pretty top - you want to look sexy but not too formal if it's for a romantic dinner with your DH... and some nice new underwear Wink

How exciting to be having a night out with DH! I haven't been out alone with DH since our DS was born and he's over 2 years old!

Pastel colours are really 'in' at the moment. Personally I'm not a pastel colours kinda gal but it's worth experimenting. For example, I found a lovely pastel blue light knit in Gap last week which looks great with jeans and a blazer. I think tube skirts with a light knit and heels can look really glamorous and you can add a statement necklace too (or a touch of leopard if you are me).

I've seen a lot of 'Crayola' colours, in M&S for example. What kind of colours do you like wearing? I've seen a lot of floral prints too, and lace.

Are you skirt and heels kind of person or more smart jeans and a nice top? Would this kind of look make you run a mile or not? I reckon it's pretty easy to re-create from the high street: www.pinterest.com/pin/238901955207308718/

I think the trick is to avoid doing too many trends in one go. Sometimes it's easier to weave in a trend via accessories instead, for example, this mint green clutch from ASOS:

Yes I love that frankie! Apparently I am Blue Spring so can get away with most colours!

You absolutely cannot wear boyfriend jeans for a date night with your husband!!

The main trends for Spring Summer are monochrome (anyone can pull that one off), pastels, but also royal blue/black which looks really classy.

Go for a skirt or a dress!

Thanks Nikki, I like the idea of monochrome, can't remember the last time I wore a skirt though!

If you change the colour of the jumper to pretty pink, and use a clutch instead of of tote bag, I think this so a great outfit

Personally I think monochrome is a really harsh look. I would never buy a black and white dress in a million years. I like nilbyname's suggestion above.

Something that makes you feel nice, if skirts and dresses aren't 'you' then you will be uncomfortable in one all night.

I would go for some nice skinny wax coated jeans or straight leg dark denim jeans, heels and a pretty top. Add a necklace/arm candy and away you go - ENJOY!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I feel a bit more prepared for shopping tomorrow! Dh treated me to a surprise manicure and hair cut today so my nails are a lovely pastel colour and will be my inspiration!
