Too late to get slim and sexy at 48?

bevy2603 · 15/03/2014 08:37

I am majorly overweight 13st 10lb 5ft4" and nearly 48! Feel like I have left it too late to get slim and sexy! Started the gym and healthy eating but it seems to be taken an age to see any results and time is already not on my side with my 50th insight!!!

Have I left it all too late?

It's never too late! Your metabolism does slow down as you age which is why it's harder to lose weight now than in your 20s or 30s. So better to do it now than leave it till your 50s or 60s Wink Exercise and healthy eating is the best way to do it imo.

Just keep going, it's much harder to lose weight at this age. I'm about to take up a Zumba class as I'm feeling creaky.

Hey it is never to late! I am 49 in August and am in better shape now than 10 years ago.

Taking an age is good though, slow results are better than losing weight quickly and then piling it all plus more back on.

I wear bikinis on holiday, skinny jeans, slim dresses. I will not be like my mum at 50 ever! Grin

It's not too late, if you're only 48 you could only be halfway through life Grin

Keep plugging away at the gym. Keep a food diary of every single thing so you can see if you're secretly snacking and just take it slowly. Set goals of half a stone at a time.

You can do it Grin

Keep at it, you're doing so well! I'm 6 years younger, have been trying to get control of my diet and exercise for 10 weeks now, and I mean a concerted effort. The scales started to go down, then went up, it has been so hard and disappointing. BUT I think this last week I have finally cracked it - got control over unhealthy eating habits and am now happier on smaller portions of gorgeous healthy food (and have cemented a commitment to daily exercise) so can now start to reasonably expect proper shift in weight. This means that after 10 week I'm now at the START rather than a stone lighter as I'd hoped. I think age makes it harder but not impossible.

I started when I was 45.

I am now 47 and 36lbs lighter.

It was slow but steady and I still have another stone and half to to ideally.

  1. I started running. Very slowly and not very far to start with. Now can run 10k.

  1. Started tracking my food on myfitnesspal app.

No, it's never too late to sort your bod out.
But and it is a big but it becomes harder to do every time you let it slide. So once you achieve your sexy ass self keep on top of it. Treat your sexy bod like an ongoing project. It is easier to maintain what you built than start again.

I'm nearly 47, started low carbing on Jan 6th and I've lost a stone, taking me to my pre-kids weight for the first time in nearly 12 years!

Now I'm thinner and my knees aren't so sore I'm thinking of taking up running again.

I did the C25K about 3-4 years ago but my knees started to hurt just as I'd hit the 25ish min mark and I had to stop. I was gutted; I loved it :(

Cheers ladies - I started ww in jan and signed up to a gym which I use during my lunch times! Got vegas trip looming in April and Ibiza in August - so no pressure lol - have lost 12lb so far - I know it's going to take time and the slower the better just wished my birthdays took their time to come round - think 48th birthday in two weeks time has scared me!

Never too late.
Am 47,had been gradually increasing in size since 40 Blush
Not obese as such but in the overweight category at over ten and half stone at 5 ft 3.
I decided in early January to commit to proper exercise so joined aerobics and weights class once a week which in turn has led to doing 30 day shred on other days.
Using MFP and logging calories has helped too.
I now feel better than I have in years,am drinking less alcohol too!
I've lost about 9 lbs since Jan and am under 10 stone for first time in years!

I'm considered to be in my early 30's and I never say anything:) a friend who does know my real age asked if I had sold my soul to the devil:)

I keep very fit by running, hair cut and coloured, wear clothes that fit and are not baggy, sleep loads and drink lots of water. I low carb like mad ( thanks BIWI if you ever come on this board:)

It takes effort. I have young dc which helps. I don't think about my age at all, I look in the mirror and see me, not a number.

Keep at it:) its worth it:)

Do use myfitnesspal it makes a huge difference - if you write it down, all your exercise, everything you eat, you're much more likely to get results. I always found it easy to think that what I was eating should be okay, but the difference between weight gain / maintain acne / loss is a few hundreds calories a day for most people. Very easy to get that wrong with busy lives and cake at work!

When I was 46 I felt and looked crap. I was exactly the same weight as you and every time I saw that 13.10 on the scales I hit the biscuit tin. Now I am 48 and have lost 3 and a half stone and weigh 10.2. I did it by using MFP religiously, logging everything I ate and soon learned why I was overweight Grin I read the success stories every day and that gave me the motivation - if people can lose 10 stone, I could lose a third of it. It took a year but I've kept it off now for over a year and absolutely love being slim, and knowing that 12's will fit. Go for it, you wont regret it - it's the best thing.

Don't you dare say it's ever too late!
I am late 50s and weigh the same as I did at 21- under 8st.

It's possible- just sheer hard work!

Go for it.

You're 12 pounds down? Fantastic result! It's not too late, keep at it. Are you a dress size smaller yet?

When you're starting from a point of having several stone to lose, the first one doesn't seem to show up much, but as soon as you lose the next half and then the next stone you will really see a difference.

Are you doing some weight training? That will help the fat loss and improve your shape as well as protecting your bones for later life. My other tips are to use a bit of rose hip oil on any slight wrinkles, keep hydrated for health and for the good of your skin. Upping the fruit and veg intake will make you feel better from the inside. Maintaining a hairstyle I like and keeping hair condition good both really help how I feel about myself, as does eyebrow threading and eyebrow pencil on my rather patchy brows.

I'm 47 next week, have lost 1.5 stone this year - got a couple more to lose. I still (modestly) reckon I've got it! Grin

Hellon is right, the first stone folks dont really notice but after that people start to comment and that just spurs you on! But 12lbs is brilliant - you can do it, you ARE doing it Grin

Not too late. I am 44 and want to also thank BIWI with all my heart for starting me up on the low carb route.

What has worked for me is low carbing, My Fitness Pal + FitBit.

I have lost nearly two stone this year.

Aw, that's lovely Mae!

And bevy263 - to confirm what everyone else says - it's definitely not too late. I started low carbing seriously when I was 52 and lost 2 stones. I'm now 54 and although I weigh a bit more, a lot of that is down to muscle from all the work I've been doing in the gym as well.

Good luck!

I am loving all this inspiration and encouragement - you are right 48 is just a number but it still scares me when I hear myself saying it! I am so annoyed I have left it till now to sort out when it gets tougher to shape up! I count points and track on mfp been exercising 3 to 4 times a week, Hellonheels I need to look into weight training!

Got 4 weeks to vegas and would like to lose another 10lb????

Seriously, keep at it as you will reap the rewards health-wise later on. I work in an area where I see how important this is. Do weight training, strength and balance exercises, keep your joints strong, take up swimming, get flexible and don't worry about numbers on the scales. Sermon over Grin

You are right about the first stone - no one has noticed but I can feel it in my jeans! So may be the next stone will get noticed? I could do with a running pal?
