dye hair blonde to brown - will it go green?

My natural hair colour is dark blonde/light brown tinged with grey. Up until about 6 months ago I was dyeing it mid brown. Since then my hairdresser has been gradually adding caramel & honey blonde highlights (not bleach) & has left the brown dye to grow out, but I'm not overly keen on the shade & the root regrowth looks really dark & really obvious within about a week of colouring. Plus its costing me a small fortune to get it done each month.

I want to colour it at home but have heard so many horror stories about blonde hair turning green when you dye it brown I am a little scared to bite the bullet.

Will it do that even though its not been bleached? can anyone recommend a make/colour I could use - I want a chocolatey kind of colour.

TIA.x

I did this recently. I dyed it first with a reddish shade, which I was told would prevent it from going green. Then a few days later I dyed it again with a light brown. It didn't go green and I had quite a few highlights in it. I think I used a L'oreal dye.

If you choose a warm based light brown it should be ok, don't go for an ash toned brown, that'll give the khaki effect. I've used Boots own semi permanent in very light brown before over highlighted hair which turned out fine, but it is a very light brown colour. You'll be good with any golden/warm brown shades & if you're deciding between two, choose the lightest, box dyes always come out darker than what's shown on the box! It's always easier to go a step darker than it is to try and lighten your hair if it goes too dark!
