Dye my hair for me

I'm feeling down about many things today (mostly overtired moaning due to non-sleeping baby), but one thing I figure I can do something about is my hair.

I have a few rogue white hairs, front and sides, and I would like to blend them out. I don't want to dye my hair in a block of colour, and I don't want to be left with reddish highlights once the dye fades and the bleach remains.

I have fairly standard mid brown hair. It was highlighted at a (bloody expensive) salon last summer, but I have not the time or money for that now. Can anyone recommend something that I can use that won't leave me with a touch of ginge in two months time, but will make me look a bit less haggard and neglected?
I will be overwhelmingly grateful for all your wisdom and advice.

If you're wanting to keep your hair a flat brown colour, I would suggest a light ash brown, by clairol Nice & Easy and because its to cover grey, I would suggest it be the permanent one. I say light because box dyes have a tendency to come out dark anyway and ash so you won't be left with any/much red tones. Clairol also do the root touch up, which could be easier if you are just wanting to touch up the hairline, however I don't think they do this in the specific light ash brown shade, just a 'brown shade, - so I do t know if it would have any warmer/red tones?

If you have quite white patches across the temples it is better to go for a neutral brown because you need to add a red element back in with the colourless white hairs.Because it is neutral- it shouldn't fade to red.
Medium brown by L'oreal excellence is the best one for covering grey and not fading I have found. It doesn't go fright wig dark either ....

I have been you tubeing and apparently purple blue or silver shampoos can get rid of ginge in blonde hair dep on the colour - has anyone tried these on lightened brown hair?

I have just used clairol medium ash blonde on my darkish brown hair and it came out orangey brown. I was dissapointed as I was hoping it would stay brown but a bit lighter lighter and that the greys would come out blonde like highlights but my hair all looks the same colour - a bit lighter but gingery. So anyway medium ash brown might work for you but medium ash blonde prob not if I am anything to go by!

I'd also agree with Nice and Easy light ash brown. That's the one I use and it's not particularly light to be honest. It covers well and I find it easy to use.

I used to use nice and easy light ash brown but did find the red tones came in after a few weeks.

I'm currently mixing light ash brown with dark blonde (buy two packs, use half of each colour; keep rest for next month/six weeks) and have splashed out on Aveda blue malva shampoo to keep the red tones down.

I'm very happy with this combo at the moment. The colour mix is better for me as the plain light brown came out a bit harsh on my hair - I left it for the longest recommended time because the greys didn't take the colour for shorter times but the colour intensity was too much.

I would suggest a dark or natural blonde with ash tones (colour number should be X.0), that way you'll get subtle highlights. Grey hairs will be dark blonde and your brown hair will stay pretty much the same.

I quite like the olia one, garnier maybe.

Hellon are the activators for the two colours the same leve or do you mix those aswell?

Ooh can I hijack to ask what people would suggest for mid-brown hair which is now quite thoroughly peppered with grey? I've used Castings light brown every 3-4 weeks for about 5 years but I'm starting to notice a real gingeryness which wasn't there before and is presumably down to the increasing amounts of grey. I'm not sure I could use an ash colour as I have quite a strong yellowish undertone to my skin so need my hair colour to be warm. My hairdresser keeps trying to persuade me to have a salon job but I'm afraid once I do that I won't be able to go back to home colouring and I really can't afford reguar salon dyes.

Giraffes I am a bit thick - which one is the activator? The white creamy liquid or the thinner dark coloured liquid?

I use one single bottle of the white thick liquid and pour in half of each of the different bottles of the dark thin liquid. Seems to work ok (so far!)
