I bought a big tub and when I brought it home, its hard, like a rock. Stupid question alert but how do people use that as an emollient, hair conditioner etc? I can see me eating or cooking with it but feck all else!

As soon as you scoop a blob with your fingers, it will instantly start to melt in your hand.
Rub your hands together and splurge on hair or body.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Fri 28-Feb-14 16:34:26

I scrape it with the back of my fingernail. One or two sweeps of my finger harvests about 1/4 - 1/2 cc, which is generally enough for my whole face. I melt it by rubbing it between my palms.

It goes such a l

long way?

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Fri 28-Feb-14 16:35:55

ong way that I would never use up a whole jar before it went off. So I decant a couple of spoonfuls into a little tub for the bathroom, and keep the jar in the fridge.

Really? Its like a frickin rock!!!

<prepares to give it a go!>

Sometimes my phone posts before I'm ready!

IslaValargeone Fri 28-Feb-14 16:37:38

premature communication.

Floisme Fri 28-Feb-14 16:41:32

If it's that hard, it sounds to me like there's something wrong. As other posters have said, you should be able to scrape some off quite easily.

HandsOffMyGazBaz Fri 28-Feb-14 16:42:07

Hey its very common grin

Ok I will try to take a bit out and see how I get on!

Amrapaali Fri 28-Feb-14 16:45:46

Blitz it for 20 seconds in the microwave. T will soften.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Fri 28-Feb-14 16:57:54

If you've only just walked into the house with it then it probably is very hard because its coooold outside. Tomorrow it will still be firm, but much softer. Melts at about 20C, I think.

Best not to nuke it, as that will negate some of the benefits of using cold-pressed VCO.

tshirtsuntan Fri 28-Feb-14 17:07:29

I buy it in a Glass bottle and pop it in a bowl of hot water or the bath to soften.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Fri 28-Feb-14 17:07:33

<I'm not embarassed, but do you think one of these might help?>

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Fri 28-Feb-14 17:08:32

(Doh! Maybe I should just get a new phone!)

In summer, the stuff's a dribbly nightmare.

fideline Fri 28-Feb-14 17:21:17

(hit send too soon) but i have certainly had to take nail scissors to coconut oil in winter before. How cold is the room? Just pop it on a radiator for a bit.

IslaValargeone Fri 28-Feb-14 19:24:01

grin at Hergraciousmaj grin

MostlyCake Fri 28-Feb-14 19:31:01

Where do you get coconut oil? Have heard good things and feel like giving it a go!

fideline Fri 28-Feb-14 19:32:46

Amazon or boots do little jars

fideline Fri 28-Feb-14 19:34:26

Or any shop stocking a reasonable range of cosmetics etc for BME skin/hair

IslaValargeone Fri 28-Feb-14 19:34:47

Sainsbury's also do it in the olive oil aisle.
Virgin organic stuff for about £6.99

I pup a bit in my hand, it melted like butter, I have swishy hair, a soft face, improved gums and a nice smell about me!

Fabulous stuff!
