Help needed to sort greasy hair nightmare!!

Hello, looking for some help with my Dd's hair which is currently a disaster. She is 11 years old so I think the hair problem is hormonal. It has been getting greasier over time and this morning she has set off for her first day back at school in tears as it looks so bad. She washed it last night but has woken up with a greasy mess. Does anyone have advice on which products to use, how often to wash etc. Really want to help her as she has poor self esteem when it comes to her appearance already and having bad hair is not helping. Thanks

Have you tried dry shampoo for mornings like this one?

& I know its much easier to say than do but apparently it helps if you wash it less too.

My hair went very greasy in pregnancy. I used lush I love juicy shampoo and very little conditioner: none on the roots
They do one called happy happy joy joy: it is more of a confining perfume. I also used loads of coconut oil once a week prior to washing- theory is that oil melts off oil.
HOpe this helps

I have really greasy hair and have to wash it every morning. If I wash it the night before it's greasy by the morning.
Do you have time to wash and dry it in the mornings?
Also dry shampoo put on straight after drying means that it doesn't get greasy during the day either.
I use Aussie volume shampoo and conditioner and batiste dry shampoo.

Also conditioner on the ends only and make sure everything is rinsed out really well.

She needs to wash it every morning with a good shampoo - I really like John Frieda volumising shampoo.

Are you drying it before bed?

If you don't have time to wash it in the morning try putting dry shampoo on after you wash and dry her hair the night before - I've found this more effective than using the dry shampoo on already greasy hair.

Agree with all the above tips.

If I wash my hair at night I make sure I dry it completely with a hair dryer. Leaving it to dry naturally seems to make it more limp and greasy.

Using a good volumising shampoo. I only use conditioner once a week.

Batiste dry shampoo is fantastic!

Thanks so much for all your suggestions, going to Boots later to see what I can find. Will look at lush online too, have read it is good to have a few shampoos to rotate with so having a few to try might be good. onetired I tried dry shampoo this morning but it still didn't look great, maybe due to lack of time to sort it properly. Think we will need to change our routine and make sure we are up early enough to wash her hair in the morning. Didn't have time today as we were cutting it close for leaving on time and she has long and quite thick hair so would take a while to dry. ophiotaurus and raypurchase will try the dry shampoo after washing and drying tip too. Thanks again, hope she's not having too bad a day and we can get her off to school feeling better about her hair tomorrow.

ruddy and madamecake she is a bit lazy about her hair drying and brushing and has been known to go to bed with it slightly damp. Will make sure she doesn't dotthat anymore, if she moans I will tell her mumsnet says she has too! Will add batiste to my shopping list, was economising with Asda own brand Smile

If you can, put it in a plait if she washes it the night before. Also, wash it as soon as she gets in from school rather than leaving it until close to bedtime.

If she has dark hair I would recommend the batiste for brown hair. This is the one I use as I have dark hair and it makes a big difference and it doesn't look like I've got talc in my hair!
Also make sure you spray it on and then massage in like you would normal shampoo and then brush it, this stops it looking powdery.
Good luck!

T gel is v good. She is slightly under the age though (think from age 12? Could be wrong!)

I use the timotei for greasy hair, I used to be the same as your daughter and would wash my hair every day.

Once i realised i was doing more harm than good i stopped, your just stripping the natural oils out of the hair so please dont wash everyday, if you start that she'll be doing it for years to come. Instead wash the evening before, completely dry then the next morning spray with the bastiste dry shampoo (i also agree about getting the matching hair coloured one), then put hair up.

If she wants to leave her hair down then i would wash in the morning to ensure its absoluetly clean for the day ahead. This is what i have to do anyway! I have gone from washing every single morning, to washing maybe twice 3 times a week which is a massive difference and time saver for me Smile good luck!

My hair is really straight and really fine and as a result gets greasy very quickly. I second the tip for giving freshly washed and dried hair a squizz of Batiste dry shampoo at the fringe and roots. It's the only thing that works for me and my hair looks just as fresh at the end of the day.

Try a silicone free shampoo (herbal essences have just bought one out) this makes a huge difference to me. Especially if you are "artificially" drying it.

Thanks again everyone, got a couple of shampoos to try and the batiste for brown hair. Will work my way through the other shampoos if these don't work. The washing and drying tips are great too. Hopefully some good hair days coming soon Grin

It's worth trying sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner.
Gentle formulations won't irritate her scalp as much and therefore shouldn't produce as much oil. It can be a vicious cycle.

I really rate hairfix pre cleanse - it's a non lathering gel that you rub through your hair before washing. It cuts the grease and then you can use a gentle shampoo. I really rate Philip Kingsley shampoos. This is the only thing that saved my hair post pregnancy. It went Mental. I use it twice a week.

As for dry shampoo, the only good one is the bastise XXL one - the ordinary one is pants for really greasy hair.

I agree with whitecat - avoid any silicone etc.

Keep conditioner away from scalp. In my teens I went mad trying to get the greasies out. I used to use talc or eau de cologne on my scalp (DO NOT DO THIS!) then use old tights poked thro a brush and brush through. No wonder my scalp is so sensitive now!!!!!

Now I am in my 50's I still get greasy hair and also am a 'hothead' so wash my hair every other day with a gentle shampoo but only once, then very little condition on the ends and sides by my ears as the hairs get crispy and flyaway if I don't. I did find it help to have an all in one (conditioner added) and the shampoo I use now does have one but if my hair were longer I would deffo need a separate conditioner.I cut my hair cos the tangles were annoying., ditto the pink bottle said to make your hair shine.

In the past I have used Vosene, Silvikrin, Sunsoft, Linco beer (could not use regularly for some reason but now and again did the trick) Weirdly Loreal - the orange clear one did not make my hair any greasier and left it light and shiny but I stopped using it because of my scalp sensitivity

Maybe have a word at the chemists? They may be able to advise you. If it gets really bad, perhaps take her to the doctors. I never bothered though, I just thought it was a fact of life.

Mum would go on at me for regularly washing my hair but I hated leaving it greasy and sweaty. She did nto understand as hers was dry.

Oh I hate the XXL Batiste, it's to give volume more than anything else, it made my hair feel so clumpy. Ordinary Batiste is much better.

If her hair is very long then I would consider getting it cut and asking for layers. I find that when mine is longer the weight of the hair pulls it down, making it look flatter and greasier.

Also is her forehead greasy? This can make the fringe greasy even if recently washed. Might be an idea to keep some face.wipes in her bag to freshen up in the afternoons.
