splitting nails....

I used to bite my nails when i was younger and ever since ive been trying to grow them but every time especially after getting my hands wet they become very soft and start to split or break. What can i use to strenghten them. i dont really want to use false nails.

vaseline hand and nail cream works really well to strengthen them, or can you paint them? mine are soft too but i clear paint them to make them a bit stronger
