Style and beauty

I am probably a naive idiot but this has shocked me...

I watched ?The men who made us thin? on catch up TV tonight and heard that celebs do deals with magazines months in advance to photograph them fat and then again months later when they have lost it all ? I genuinely thought the weight gain was accidental but apparently several of them are on the gain/lose cycle as they earn a fortune from it ? what an appalling thing to do ? both in terms of the harm to themselves but also the impact they have on other women's feelings of self worth. I used to feel sorry for women who were featured in this way....not any more...

who does this?

PomBearArmy · 25/08/2013 00:48

Josie from Big Brother, that weatherwoman - any female celebrity who runs around in public wearing very little while very overweight is doing it for a financial reason.

And Natalie Cassidy from Eastenders is a weight gain and loss careerist.

blimey!
(maybe they figured they'd do it anyway so they might as well cash in Confused )

Any chubby female Z list sleb "papped" in a bikini is doing it for cash. She will then lose the weight and release a DVD sighting the reason for her weight loss was being papped looking chubby. Cynical, lucrative and keeps the sleb in the public eye.

The example quoted in the show by the publicist who talked about was Jade Goody who he claimed made several hundred thousand this way.

Gosh. I never knew that either. Shocking.

I never knew it for sure but it really doesn't surprise me. I've lays hated the way that Natalie Cassidy gets slim, says how amazing it is and then gets big again and says it was such hard work to be slim and I feel so sexy being big, loses weight again...

I'm so cynical of the whole celeb thing-the endorsements, ambassadors for products/brands etc. I don't believe a word of it when such and such will say that this is their favourite lipstick/shampoo.

Rant over Grin

I didn't know that either, but am also very cynical about just how much advertising / promoting celebs do. And feel a bit sad for some of them at how much of themselves they seem to sell for publicity. Mainly the ones who don't have an actual talent that will keep them in the spotlight / solvent?

There is something sad about it

If I were a celeb, well let's just say I'd be ripe for the before photos about now.

I particularly love how in all the before photos they have dreadful posture and are very very pale.

And then afterwards they are miraculously skinny (well for 3 days) and very heavily fake tanned.

surely its no surprise
does anyone actually believe that the tripe in the mags is true

Report
ExitPursuedByABear · 25/08/2013 09:02

To be honest, I don't read sleb mags, though I am partial to the sidebar of shame.

Report
MarshaBrady · 25/08/2013 09:06

It's bad. But it's all just making some £ and if you're focused on exposure as a way to get money then you'll probably cook up all sorts of things.

Most of it will be made up or faked etc.

MarshaBrady · 25/08/2013 09:07

And it was news to me too. But not surprised now I know.

Anyone pictured eating a cream cake - Claire from Steps, Nadia Sawalha, Kerry Kuntona. You can now actually predict the diet story.

Whenever any z-list celeb is photographed doing anything - looking fat, snogging another z-list celeb (coincidentally represented by the same agent), falling out of a particular nightclub, doing press-ups in Hyde Park in full make-up, on holiday 'with their family in X resort' - there's almost certainly a cash reason for it.

Now the bikini body season's drawing to a close, it's nearly time for the crop of wobbly pap shots around Sept, to get the New Year DVD underway. So any celebs that have gone unusually quiet over the summer? I bet Imogen Thomas is doing a 'Blast Your Mummy Tummy' one.

I was gobsmacked at this too. But then, if people didn't read the rubbish in these mags, there wouldn't't be a market, would there?

All fairly predictable.

I thought the man (towards the end of the programme) who was able to eat what he liked by draining the contents of his stomach down the loo was truly the stuff of nightmares!

Loving this programme!

I'm going to eat a chocolate eclair this afternoon and see if I'm bikini ready by October.

Biryani, do you mean that he vomited, far as i know you cant make the stomach contents empty from the other end of the digestive tract...colonic irrigation would only flush out the contents of the bowel and most of the nutrients would have been removed at earlier stages of digestion.
I spose it would give you a flatter belly but only because your large intestine would be less full

Report
sophiedaal · 25/08/2013 10:51

Make sure you eat it in an unflattering crop top, and look really sad and disgusted with yourself. Push your tummy out as much as possible, and ideally stand in a position that can be replicated in 3 months time, but with less gut. Maybe give your celebrity trainer 'friend' a call and see if he'll pop round to share an easy-to-follow weight lss and toning programme with you? It'll only take 13 minutes a day!

[sad but sympathetic face]

Lazy: this man, who had already lost a good deal of weight, has invented a system whereby a tube is inserted into his body (I assume his stomach, but could have been any part of his digestive system..). At intervals during the day, he empties the liquid contents of his digestive system into the toilet using a sort of tap attached to the top of the tube. A bit like a catheter, if you get my drift.

So he gets to eat what he likes. What I didn't understand though, was how many calories had already been absorbed by this stage. I don't think the interviewer asked that.

Fascinating!

Biryani...crikey!

thats just a sort of high tech bulimia though isnt it?
I mean it's binging & purging without the tooth decay.

what was the programme please...I've looked through the thread but I cant see it, I am television-less so I'd only be able to watch it if it's on an internet catch up thing

No doubt that Frankie from the Saturdays was starving herself before she got pregnant. She look big now but so much 'healthier' for it. I hope she doesn't del pressure to go back to being a rake again once the baby is born.
