Fringe: yes or no?

Having the fringe dilemma.
My hair is just below my shoulders and thick/wavy. I've noticed I look quite 'severe' now I'm getting older, and wondered if a fringe would soften my features and make me look younger - or would it just be frumpy.
Any suggestions - and if yes - what type of fringe!

Be careful that you don't end up with a curly fringe if you have wavy hair, takes a lot of styling. What about some layers and a sweeping side fringe like this

That's lovely - do you think it would be a lot of work. I am a bit crap on the styling front. Good point about the curly fringe!

Depends on type of hair you have. If you have a loose natural wave and hair not to thick you could run some mousse through, dry upside down focussing on drying hair at scalp for lift. Then upright dry in waves, blasting fringe and layers to side. Wouldn't take long, hairdresser could show you as styling it. If your hair s very thick and waves are more curls then would be a bit more work.
If you've never had a fringe before I would def recommend a longer fring to start off with, in case you don't like it.

this is the pic I took with me when I had my fringe cut in last year. I had never had a fringe in my life, I loved it and it was not hard to style, my hair is very similar to the pic but probably a bit thicker, I just blow dried the fringe and left the rest to dry as usual. I decided to grow it out as I like to change my hair frequently and it was no trouble to grow out.

i like my fringe, but it's layered not straight and sort of flicks out, hate it when i grow it out!

My hair is thick wavy and coarse-I thought I'd really regret a fringe but I love it! I do straighten everyday but I did that anyway so it's no different anyway.

I had a long side sweeping fringe cut in recently and I love it. It is long, if I pull it straight down it hits the tip of my nose but it does sweep to the side of my face.

TBH was a bit irritating at first as I wasn't used to having hair on my face but I soon got used to it.

I get a fringe cut every few years, hate it immediately, and grow it out.

If you're going to get one, get a long side sweeping one so you can grow it out quickly enough if you don't like it. You can always go shorter a bit at a time once you're sure you like it.

I wouldn't start one just at the beginning of summer. It gets sweaty and greasy. Wait until autumn I would.

FWIW I have an asymmetric fringe and it's easily swept to the side or worn straight down. I was a bit when the hairdresser suggested it but I really like it now.

MrsBetseyTrotwood - your fringe sounds great, but I can't visualise it! If you have a moment to spare, please may you link me to a similar style? Also, what kind of hair do you have?

I love having a fringe but mine is a nightmare because it grows out so fast (literally have to trim it weekly), so I'd love to be able to sweep it to one side. I have a thick, blunt, 1960s style fringe and very long, straight hair which is fine in texture but very densely packed - do you think something similar would work on it with minimal day-to-day effort?

Do it, do it, do it! I wasted about ten years trying to decide whether to get a fringe. I did and LOVE it. And if I had not loved it it would have taken a few weeks to grow to length where it can be pinned back. I didn't even own a hair dryer. Now dry fringe each morning which is no trouble and leave rest to dry naturally as before. Such a low risk decision and people say I look younger and less severe. Do it!

Yes. I had one put in a couple years ago - I think it's taken years off me - I had the whole severe thing going on too, and a fringe definitely softens the face a bit.

I had posted here before about my receding hairline worries! Got a thick blunt fringe cut in and I luffs it! Hair up for work looks instantly smarter and it can still be pinned away for the gym. I still get compliments about my change nearly 4weeks later and it's taken years off me!

But a bit smoother around the edge of the fringe. And the rest of my hair was cut choppier and layered to match. The length of my hair comes a couple of inches past my collarbone and is fine but thick.

I also look nothing like that person modelling her do!!

It's very user friendly. Even today, as I bang out the last of my MSc assignment and the DCs kill each other, it's greasily flicked back and still go out able.

I decided to try a long, heavy fringe and did it myself following a youtube video where you twist the hair and cut into it. It was really easy to follow and although the fringe at the time didn't really suit me, within a couple of weeks it had grown and is now swept to the side and looks much better. Even my hairdresser commented on how nice it was!

I hadn't had a fringe since I was 9, but bit the bullet and got one cut, a la Claudia Winkleman (only blonde). I love it, it's taken years off me, and loads of people have commented on it. So I say, go for it :)
