Epilator- honest advice please!

I normally wax and have done so for a few years, legs and bikini.
However, I have always hated the three week post wax stage when there's hair on your legs, but too soon to be waxed off. It doesn't look good with shorts or skirts. Been thinking for a while about getting an epilator instead to keep on top of hairs once a week. I am also in the process of moving abroad and will be wearing bare legs all year round so this is really bugging me!
Please can you advise on whether epilator a really work, I can take the pain if its about the same as a wax! And if yes, then which model for a novice. Thanks x

Oh thanks, you've just reminded me I need to e-bay my epilator Grin.

The pain isn't that bad but I found I needed to go over the same part of my legs over and over again and it just takes ages. And I was left with the most awful ingrowing hairs from epilating. It's nowhere near as good as a wax imo.

I LOVED my epilator, and only got rid of it because I was moving to the US. The Braun one I had really did work to get rid of the tiniest hairs, although it took a while and you had to have a good look to make sure you hadn't missed any. But I seem to have a fairly high pain threshold - waxing has never been particularly painful for me, so I don't know how much that helps! (Also, I was only using it for my legs - using it on my bikini line was a nuisance, but that's because I'm a slummer and tend to put up with 1970s porno pubes until it's time to go on holiday.)

I hated it I think I have used mine once it's a Braun one with all the attachments etc. I actually tried to do under my arms and have never felt pain like it! I think I will ebay mine too unless anyone wants to buy it Wink

I love my epilator & find it works really well. I find it less painful than waxing & just go over my legs every day in the summer. It's also fine for underarms, but the bikini line is quite sore to do.

I have this one (hope link works) if not it's the Philips HP6579 Satin Perfect from Argos.

I wouldn't go for a very cheap model - my first was one from Lidl & it hurt like hell.

I have a Braun silk Epil 7, it comes with a shaving attachment as well and can be used wet or dry. It is better to use on shorter hairs as really pulls them out by the roots.

I love it.

I think it's prolly same as waxing on a pain scale, altho I've been waxing/epilating for years so my hairs are finer and the process is not as painful as it could be.

Oh and I've used it on legs, bikini area and underarms

You need to get one with 40 tweezers rather than 20. I use mine on my legs once a week and my skin is much less irritated than it was when I was shaving my legs every day. I still shave my pits though, cos I am a wuss!

It stings the first few times, but then I expect waxing does too. Wouldn't be without it now. I have the Braun silk epil, which is fine, but I think that soon I will replace it with one that gets the very short hairs more easily.

I love mine and would never go back to waxing. The thing I hated about waxing was that I had to let the hair grow back. With an epilator, I just go over my legs once a week, and that seems to be enough. I only do my legs though, I can't face doing my underarms or bikini line, so I shave those. I also find it less painful than waxing, possibly because I'm doing it myself, and it's only a very small bit at a time, not a whole strip in one go if you're waxing.

However, I have two teenage DDs, and they prefer waxing. They hate the epilator!

Can you borrow an epilator just to try it first?

I have the brain wet and dry one with the Venus razor attached... Love it,

Doesn't really hurt if you do it quickly and use foam or shower gel.

I have the Braun Silk Epil Wet and Dry. It doesn't hurt at all, in fact I find the sensation quite pleasant and tingly! I do it dry, not wet, and don't even bother with the anti-pain attachment thingy any more.

I found waxing much more painful but I think that was partly because it was someone else doing it and it made me really tense, expecting the pain and not knowing exactly when it would come!

I hate it, but love the fact that you have to do it far less often than shaving. Although it definitely doesn't leave my legs feeling smooth.

I generally get rid of all the hair at the beginning of summer (over a few days) then just have to shave them once a week or so to keep them smooth.

I only use it on my legs though; wax bikini line and shave armpits.

It's a full time job.

I had one and it didn't work very well - my hairs are quite fine and it didn't grab them very well at all.

I've recently got a Braun silk epil and don't think I'll go back to waxing.

I do my legs thoroughly over a few days, then weekly. Similarly my underarms.

Pain is ok, no worse than waxing. And it only lasts a second.

Best of all is the money I'm saving through not having to go to a salon to be waxed (can't do it on myself).

I've only ever used epilators since I was a teenager. The pain is minimal (but admittedly I have few, fine hairs). The best thing is the hairs grow back less and less the more you use it so after 20+ years use, I only need to do a quick minute or two on each leg once a week.
And they last for ages, I've only ever bought two in 20+ years.

Make sure you exfoliate before using to help prevent in grown hairs.

I bought a Philips because it was on offer, it's not one that you can use in the bath (the light is no good in my bathroom anyway), but even so I'm pretty impressed with it.

My leg hair is patchy anyway after years of waxing so that is pretty easy, bikini etc is fine too but I have a feeling that I may have a fairly high pain threshold. I used to wax at home and even with a proper waxing pot I would get in a sticky mess, this is much better.

I do exfoliate a lot though, so (touch wood) I haven't had any ingrown hairs.

thanks, have bought a Phillips satin epilator and look forward to silky soft legs! Underarms and bikini line will have to wait until I know I can do it properly. Waxing is fairly ok foe me and leg hair very fine and sparse. I can even pluck out stray hairs with my fingers so def comes out very easily!

The karmin electric epilator is my favorite, it makes my skin look very healthy :)

Underarms hurt like hell the first time but you need to persevere and do it in short bursts. I promise the next time is nowhere as bad and after 3 or 4 goes it becomes painless.
I only need to spend a few seconds a week now and there's no stubbly regrowth ever. Wouldn't go back.
