What are you supposed to wear on top of 'going-out' dresses?

I wear dresses a lot. I live in England. Therefore the dresses on their own tend to be chilly.

For work dresses, I wear a blazer or jacket. For weekend dresses, maybe a cardi. For the life of me I cannot work out what you're supposed to do with a cocktail dress.

I suspect a cardi is wrong? In the nineties I used to be wedded to the pashmina, but that's wrong too now, isn't it? The answer cannot simply be 'just get cold' can it?

Mmmmmmmm .......just get cold!

This is what I do (as I love a posh frock);

If I'm arriving by car right outside the venu......just wack up the heating and sprint inside.
If I'm going to have to be outside for any length of time (getting to and from) I wear warmest or weather appropriate coat which I ditch before I enter (most places have a cloakroom)I have a few black ones which wouldn't look bad if I bumped into a fellow guest en route.
If its a cold venu I wear a vest.....but tbh most places are warm inside.

I have a cropped 3/4 sleeve faux fur (not scabby looking!) jacket for when its really cold, otherwise brave it!

I do the taxi to venue. Coat in cloakroom and brave it with just the dress.

Usually warm enough inside anyway.

Brave it, I think at this time of year. Otherwise I also have a cream faux fur for deepest winter. I might wear a smart winter coat too.

A really soft fitted denim shirt, a waterfall cardi (in thin fabric) or an over sized blazer.

I have a white wrap, very soft, open weave.
And a very naice wool cape.

I would LOVE a Brocade/ Jaquard print satin fabric coat (might buy one some day)

Oh God I'm so uncool. I wasn't even talking aboutcoats. I mean, I'd obviously wear a coat on the way there - my winter one or my summer one depending on weather.

I sort of meant, you know, for when you're sitting by the door at a bar or somewhere. Or if you're at a wedding in the chilly church. You don't keep your coat on, so what do you do if no pashminas or cardis allowed?

Fucking hell. I already know that answer is going to be 'wear nipple guards and try and sit near a radiator'.

It's just as well I only go out about twice a decade, I'd die of freaking hypothermia. I am a very cold sort of person (that's what my exMIL told me, anyway. Though perhaps she wasn't referring to my body temperature).

Ok, those fur things linked to.... are they really what people wear? They look....weird. Like costumes for extras in an ITV period drama.

I have a frock coat, made of a heavy satin material with brocade embroidery. It can be worn done up or, if it coordinates with the dress underneath, open. On phone so can't link but there are a few examples on eBay. Karen quite often do them.

I've got a thermal camisole which I wear underneath if it doesn't show, or I try and go for something with sleeves, or I've got a little blush coloured sequinned jacket from Zara
