You could use elastic bandage, and strap it up well for the day. Socks or thick black tights will hide it. You need to work from middle of foot to half way up the calf. Curiously, bandaging horses is really good practice.
A stick (sorry) will prevent you toppling if it gives way under you, as can happen. The "smart" aluminium ones, painted black, sold for walkers will look less old-ladyish than a wooden one. You will need a rubber ferrule on it.
