I am 40 too and I think I am too old for ripped jeans. I have seen them on women the same age and they just don't look right to me. I'm not sure why. I like faded but I think ripped is just a step too far.
I think they stray slightly into the Patsy and Edina territory if you are old enough to have worn them the first time around. And that's not a blanket rule about everything that comes back in fashion- just specifically ripped jeans. Saw a pic of Elle Macpherson in them the other day and frankly she wasn't making them work.
For lots of people anything goes but for me there are definitely clothes that I find too young for myself. If you are comfortable wearing what you wear that is great but if you feel uncomfortable wearing something for whatever reason then it is best that you give it a miss.
maybemyrtle - I love those, they're gorgeous, but have never bought from Gap before. What are they like size wise? Are they pretty loyal to standard sizes? I'm a 12 but in New Look I'm a 14, for example; don't have a Gap near me so will have to order online and would rather not have to send them back if they're cut larger/smaller than average IYSWIM
I have a pair of very faded/light skinnies from Primark
Just their bog standard 7 quid jobbies and I quite like them
I've also got a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans, they're not too ripped, pretty much the same amount of rippage and the same colour as the ones linked above, I'm not keen on them if there is a lot of ripping going on.
