Useful resource or an exercise in vanity?

Hmm, not sure, usually there are recommendations etc. I'm interested on what people actually think of them. Are they inspiring? Irritating? Not as good as Pinterest?

cahu Mon 15-Apr-13 17:24:20

Bit of both..... Some I find useful and quite endearing. I think it depends on their writing style........... and others Poppys Style a little self congratulatory.

Hi Amber. I've pretty much given up on them tbh but that doesn't mean I think they are an exercise in vanity. My problem is that the blogs I like best are unattainable in the sense that the bloggers have v expensive clothes and are much, much more beautiful than me and live v different lifestyles (am thinking of Wendy in particular) or are quirky young girls in Portland, again with v different lifestyles/age/figures to me.

The blog I need (ie middle aged short arse hourglass who works full time and hasn't got a lot of money to spend on clothes but still looks brilliant and varied and possibly both quirky and professional) doesn't exist. I hate the 'mum blogs' to the point of fury and there's little else out there other than people wearing skinny jeans and scarves - I like skinny jeans and scarves but can wear those without a blog to show me how!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Mon 15-Apr-13 17:24:43

Pinterest much better.

AmberNectarine Mon 15-Apr-13 17:28:15

Agree about Wendy. I'd love to look like her but there's about 4 stone and a lot of disposable income standing in my way.

MrsCampbellBlack Mon 15-Apr-13 17:36:00

I like blogs and pinterest and magazines and S&B. I pretty much like anything to do with clothes.

I must say though I don't tend to read the words I just skim the pictures and look for links.

Ujjayi Mon 15-Apr-13 17:49:23

Agree with MrsCampbellBlack.

I also agree with Remus that the "skinnies & scarves" blogs do not inspire me. I gave up reading Bum40 for this reason. I would much rather read Atlantic-Pacific because I think a lot of her looks can be remodelled to fit in to an everyday life......unless of course DCs are still in the tiny baby/toddler stage and then perhaps 50s style skirts, cashmere and heels is not the most sensible option ;).

Bit of both I'd say amber. I guess there has to be certain amount of vanity otherwise you wouldn't put yourself out there but equally you all get loads of readers so they are a useful resource too. I dip in and out of the mum ones like yours, all worn out, dmbl40, style guile etc etc as their lifestyles relate to mine. I used to be signed up to them but quickly stopped that as reading them every day they become a bit samey. Like mrscampbell I like the links although I don't have the seemingly never ending budget like some grin.

I love Pinterest too although look at it less now as it becomes a bit samey too. I'm mainly interested in stylish and different ways to wear jeans and there's only so many ways you can do it. I've always loved magazines and looking at clothes so blogs and Pinterest are just extensions of that really.

Thing is, 'sfashion innit, so one wants to look at pictures. Blog and pictures = good, but getting the right ratio onscreen is hard.

Opinion pieces with advice work as text tho'.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Mon 15-Apr-13 18:05:53

I don't like text - most of it is just wittering and it is rarely v well written.

chanie44 Mon 15-Apr-13 18:06:39

I like reading your blog ambergrin

I've only just started reading blogs, having discovered Wendy's this weekend. I like her YouTube tutorials but will probably get bored of the blog quite easily.

I think the problem with blogging is that once it takes off, you end up loosing what the original blog was about and you end up plugging freebies or you thinking up more and more elaborate ways to keep readers interested.

I get quickly bored of most blogs as they always start out really interesting, but often get tired and same-old after a while. Some blogs are a complete exercise in vanity, and I quickly tire of the posing and the me-me-me nature of them. Others, the ones I keep following, are informative, interesting and varied with very little me-me-me.

Francagoestohollywood Mon 15-Apr-13 18:12:08

I still haven't found a blog I really like. I prefer pinterest.

Francagoestohollywood Mon 15-Apr-13 18:12:33

Who's wendy?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Mon 15-Apr-13 18:17:21

Beautiful Wendy

Francagoestohollywood Mon 15-Apr-13 18:18:21

aaaah. Too polished for me. Is she american?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Mon 15-Apr-13 18:18:27

Oh and the other thing about her is it is ALWAYS sunny! I need a little curvy person who is always getting rained on, so needs sensible coats etc. I do not live in a world where shorts and sunglasses are the norm.

Francagoestohollywood Mon 15-Apr-13 18:19:45

ah, yes, LA. Cheers remus

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Mon 15-Apr-13 18:19:55

I take it back - that's more like it!

Francagoestohollywood Mon 15-Apr-13 18:21:21

I live in Milan, it's freezing for at least 3 months a year, and I still haven't figured out how to look remotely decent without suffering the cold. When we lived in England I used to wear a hat until June hmm
