What's with all this 'peplum' nonsense?

Was out looking at clothes this morning as I'm going back to work soon after 5 yrs out of the office (yay!)

Now, I'm a fussy article anywy when it comes to clothes, but there seems to be some horrible stuff out there at the moment. Particularly lots of 'peplum' style, which seems to mean a really unflattering frill that stands out from yr waist and emphasises your childbearing hips. Does this style suit anyone?

I didn't like peplums, then had a personal shopping session before I went back to work and the shopper totally changed my view on them. They do have to sit at the right length.

I haveva bubble hem top, but its kind of long and heavy wuth pockets, I always get compliments when I wear it! even from my younger friends. I love it cos it hides my tummy sad
Its black for going out.

Can someone point me in the direction of the clothes to flatter big tummies please? grin

MeDented Fri 12-Apr-13 20:56:17

Ah I love a bubble hem, I thought they were hiding my spare tyre, am I deceiving myself? I'll need to take a long hard stare in the mirror!

FrugalFashionista Fri 12-Apr-13 20:50:55

I love peplums. One of my favorite trends recently.

Sorry peplum! Bubbles only seem to work if you have them tucked in or turned up to waist level otherwise they look sack-like and draw attention to any tummy.

bishboschone Fri 12-Apr-13 20:39:13

I am hourglass size 8 and I think they are flattering as although my bum is big my waist is very small. Alot of clothes don't flatter me as they are made to flatter big tummies therefore not showing off my waist. Sadly my dh says I look like I have my daughters top on . Hhhmm put me off a bit . He never says bad things about what I chooses to wear so it must have been bad.

Practicality- the peplum or the bubble?

RhinestoneCowgirl Fri 12-Apr-13 20:23:14

Ah, think I have bubble hem top in my wardrobe.

Does rather make me look pg...

BrianButterfield Fri 12-Apr-13 20:02:32

Bubble hems are only good for women with babies under 6 months - they're ace jelly belly disguisers. on everyone else you look like, erm, you're trying to cover up a post-natal tum!

practicality Fri 12-Apr-13 20:00:09

They are quite good on apples with tummy ishoos if they are long enough.

armagh Fri 12-Apr-13 19:25:40

I love peplums but hate bubble hems

Oh, I think they can look gorgeous and classic.

GwendolineMaryLacey Fri 12-Apr-13 19:16:31

bubble hem

OnTheNingNangNong Fri 12-Apr-13 19:13:20

drop hems and peplums really grate on me. Can a drop hem ever look good?

Most of the peplum dresses on the models look awful, I'd look tragic in one.

RhinestoneCowgirl Fri 12-Apr-13 18:53:45

I don't know what a bubble hem is... Off to google.

janmoomoo Fri 12-Apr-13 18:09:25

To me peplums just scream The Only Way is Essex style, and tango fake tans.

Growlithe Fri 12-Apr-13 17:41:57

I remember them in the 80s. I had a black and white shiny dress with shoulder pads and a peplum, and a perm, and I thought I was gorgeous. blush

OneLittleLady Fri 12-Apr-13 17:39:05

The worst thing currently is the fact that CROP TOPS have come back into 'fashion' . They make me weep because even on my best days, I'd look hideous in one

AlwaysOneMissing Fri 12-Apr-13 17:38:28

I love peplums! On some figures I think they are actually very flattering, but I can see how on some other body shapes they might not work. As with anything fashionable - you just have to pick and choose.

GwendolineMaryLacey Fri 12-Apr-13 17:30:54

Fuck knows. All it does to me is scream, hey judgers, if you didn't notice her fat arse before, you will now! hmm

That and arsebiscuity bubble hems. Which twisted fucker decided they were a good idea?

Branleuse Fri 12-Apr-13 17:29:46

peplum is fucking hideous on 98% of the population

noddyholder Fri 12-Apr-13 17:28:20

I have one on today grin bought ages ago and hung in wardrobe tbh but has been much admired even my ds who is judgy central!this

RhinestoneCowgirl Fri 12-Apr-13 17:27:42

Clothes shopping always makes me grumpy!

I'm 35, I know what suits my figure, just can't always find it...

Fuckitthatlldo Fri 12-Apr-13 17:23:19

I know what you mean. Peplums are everywhere and not flattering in the slightest. I won't be wearing one. Typical example of 'fashion' triumphing over style IMHO.
