What's with all this 'peplum' nonsense?

Was out looking at clothes this morning as I'm going back to work soon after 5 yrs out of the office (yay!)

Now, I'm a fussy article anywy when it comes to clothes, but there seems to be some horrible stuff out there at the moment. Particularly lots of 'peplum' style, which seems to mean a really unflattering frill that stands out from yr waist and emphasises your childbearing hips. Does this style suit anyone?

Yes, but you have to have very small hips. Mine are non-existant, so I think I can pull it off, but I don't like the style very much!

Luckily peplum seems to be dying out, so it should all be replaced soon.

I know what you mean. Peplums are everywhere and not flattering in the slightest. I won't be wearing one. Typical example of 'fashion' triumphing over style IMHO.

Clothes shopping always makes me grumpy!

I'm 35, I know what suits my figure, just can't always find it...

I love peplums! On some figures I think they are actually very flattering, but I can see how on some other body shapes they might not work. As with anything fashionable - you just have to pick and choose.

The worst thing currently is the fact that CROP TOPS have come back into 'fashion' . They make me weep because even on my best days, I'd look hideous in one

I remember them in the 80s. I had a black and white shiny dress with shoulder pads and a peplum, and a perm, and I thought I was gorgeous. Blush

To me peplums just scream The Only Way is Essex style, and tango fake tans.

I don't know what a bubble hem is... Off to google.

drop hems and peplums really grate on me. Can a drop hem ever look good?

Most of the peplum dresses on the models look awful, I'd look tragic in one.

They are quite good on apples with tummy ishoos if they are long enough.

Bubble hems are only good for women with babies under 6 months - they're ace jelly belly disguisers. on everyone else you look like, erm, you're trying to cover up a post-natal tum!

Practicality- the peplum or the bubble?

I am hourglass size 8 and I think they are flattering as although my bum is big my waist is very small. Alot of clothes don't flatter me as they are made to flatter big tummies therefore not showing off my waist. Sadly my dh says I look like I have my daughters top on . Hhhmm put me off a bit . He never says bad things about what I chooses to wear so it must have been bad.

Sorry peplum! Bubbles only seem to work if you have them tucked in or turned up to waist level otherwise they look sack-like and draw attention to any tummy.

Ah I love a bubble hem, I thought they were hiding my spare tyre, am I deceiving myself? I'll need to take a long hard stare in the mirror!
