Could Pantene really have 'burnt' my hair?

About 8 weeks ago I started using Pantene, didn't like how it felt went very dry - but thought I'd finish the bottle (cheapskate!) Anyway, dyed my hair 2 weeks ago, it went incredibly frizzy, my hair is usually very straight and a clump just sort of broke off, about an inch from the roots on the top.

I presumed it was the hair dye but a friend of mine today asked if I'd been using Pantene, and that many hairdressers know about this problem... Do they? How many people does this happen to?

Have now had all my had my hair cut very, very short, but the last bit still very damaged. Any ideas about what I could do while waiting for it to grow out and do you think it's worth contacting Pantene?

Really? I've never heard of this. I always use Pantene, and I have my hair professionally coloured about every three months and have never had a problem. Nor has my hairdresser ever mentioned it to me.

I react terribly to pantene. I can't use it at all as I get something similar to chemical burns on my scalp when I do. It also makes the eczema on my forehead flare up tereally badly. If I haven't brought my own shampoo, I have to go greasy rather than use it if I stay at someone else's house and it's all that's on offer. It's terrible terrible stuff

My last hairdresser used to advise against Pantene but that was due to the build up of silicon(?) or some product or other that gives that glossiness/smoothness that you get with it. No mention of burning the hair or the sort of problems you've had.

Thanks for your responses, I'm sure lots of people must use it with no problems, otherwise it wouldn't be on the market. I will just chalk it up to experience - though I have been colouring my hair for twenty years and never had this happen before!

May also need to go grey in order for it all to grow out -aaaargh!

Pantene has been known to contain metallic salts. When these compounds come into contact with peroxide they can have the effect you have described on the hair. Can I ask which box dye you used?

It was a schwartzkopp permanent colour, one of the dark reds. Sorry I can't remember exactly. Though it smelled more peroxide than usual and I took it off early as a result.

Luckily am rocking the Sinead look.

Live xxl by any chance? They have an awful reputation amongst the hairdressing industry for their strong level of metallic salts and unpredictable reactions. Knowing now that it was a schwarzkopf colour it Sounds very much to me like a metallic salt reaction.

For future colouring I would really recommend going into a salon as they can perform an incompatibility test to check for the presence of metallic salts before colouring.

If a salon is not an option, then discontinue use of the pantene, elvive is much better.

Also before colouring again grow out any remaining colour to ensure all metallic salts are gone and conduct a skin test and a strand test with the dye before using.

It really is better to be safe than sorry in these cases as If these type of reactions are severe they can cause chemical burns to the scalp and permanent follicle damage.

In the meantime get yourself a decent deep conditioning treatment and a protein treatment, and alternate them. I really rate Matrix biolage Hydratherapie balm and Joico KPak reconstructor.

Pantene makes my hair falls out - in handfuls - I too heard it was quite common that people had had adverse reactions! :-(

I had an allergic reaction to Pantene when I first tried it - after a few days I woke up to find my face swelled up. Saw a doctor who advised me to do spot tests of several new cosmetics. My skin went red around the Pantene. I stopped using it and it never happened again. I'm not a sensitive sort and my hair wasn't coloured. I guess this can happen with any hair product though.

I think Pantene is rubbish - my DH used it and came out all over in spots. Haven't bought it since.

Pantene makes my scalp and skin flare up terribly. I have only used it once, twice IYSWIM, so I can't really comment on what it does to.my hair.

I don't colour my hair but when I went for a routine cut & dry at the hairdressers the first words she said to me when touching my hair were "do you use Pantene?" When I replied yes she said I must stop straight away it was ruining my hair, something to do with silicon.

Normally I take these things with a pinch of salt but I couldn't get over the fact she could come to that conclusion so quickly. I followed her advice and switched to a more natural product and I'm pleased I did. My hair totally changed. It's thicker, softer, less static and grows better. I'd not heard of this before she told me.

I had the same reaction from a hairdresser as BNmum - was amazed that she could tell so quickly. Have never used it since, in fact won't use anything with silicones now.
Tresemme Naturals are really good and make my hair lovely and soft.
