What (or Who) is your definition of style?

Would you say that being seen as 'stylish' is having haircut/make-up that is up-to-date but flattering to you, or do you think it is wearing clothes that give a nod to the current trends but are in a colour/cut that suits your body shape. Do you think it is having the current 'must have' items or do you prefer to not follow the crowd and have your own signature piece? Who do you think always looks good and why? Who do you think always gets it wrong?

My definition of stylish:

  1. somebody really 'modern' and 'now'. But their personality and life style suits the era and the clothes look good o them.
  2. somebody classic who may not be high fashion, but still looks great.

In both cases, the individual has to have styled their most of their own look. Using a stylist is cheating.

Kate moss falls into the former. Don't necessarily like what she wears, but she has fee finger on the pulse and does look good.

Audrey Hepburn is in the later. People still wear her look now.

Don't like Victoria beckham style. Far too over styled and more a wearer of fashionable clothes rather than stylish.

I think someone who always looks just 'right' and can can takes a few items and make it look like they have an unlimited wardrobe. I have a friend who is like this - she never appears to wear the same outfit twice, is always groomed and trendy but never looks like she tries too hard. I am the opposite, my clothes wear me and i am unable to mix and match

Someone who knows their body shape well, and wears what suits them. They wear the fashion, it doesn't wear them.

I'm loving Diane Kruger at the moment.

i think that when we call someone stylish ,we are commenting on the entire "look"(hair ,makeup, good body shape, flattering clothes), you cant wear nice clothes that are ill fitting with horrible hair or bad makeup, people end up seeing the bad things instead of the good ones.
i like how french women "do" trends.they inject it gradually to their wardrobe and experiment.they never go for the whole lot at one go.

i like diane kurger style too,she wears trends without looking like a fashion victim or over done.
i think that Pippa M,gets it horribly wrong, she tries to be timeless and classic but ends up looking too old.and her fashion choices makes her look short and stumpy.which she aint!

Emmanuelle Alt. She never looks less than perfect. Doesn't deviate from the style that suits her.

Helena Christiansen, Vivienne Westwood, Audrey Hepburn, Laura Bailey.

These are all stylish women IMO but all have very different looks. I think it is because they are so unique and not just wearing "trends".

Stylish women are relaxed and confident in their choices and it shows in the way they carry themselves.

Personally, I think too many women worry about getting it right for others. Wear what suits you. Clothes and fashion should make you happy Smile

They all look amazing and not too try hard.

I would normally say Emmanuelle Alt, Sofia Copolla, etc, but I'm not so sure true style ought to involve such phenomenal amounts of money, which they quite obviously have at their disposal. Perhaps a more budget conscious version of this kind of style?
And I often find myself drawn to style which might not suit me personally. The generalization that if we are thin/slim then anything goes doesn't ring true for me (a thinnie who suits bugger all!) either.
I like the pared down, minimal look, what the style blogs might associate with Parisian women, but maybe with a dash of the unexpected on occasion, too. I am drawn to a combination of feminine-masculine, clean, simple shapes and good quality fabrics. Also fond of recent offerings by Isabel Marant, the laid-back luxury vibe....

I don't seem to like an celebrities, not sure why. Nothing they wear seems to excite me, but then I don't follow celebs or actresses so am more familiar with the 'fash pack' than Hollywood, which always appears a bit OTT for me, a bit....predictable.

Good hair helps, but I don't think body size should hinder great style. Nice nails and feel too - if only the weather would warm up so that I can give a hoot about toenail colours!

Who do I think gets it wrong?
Nobody really, not sure I care how other women dress. But I do wince a bit when I see some UK celebs like footballers wives, etc, wearing 'all the things' in one giant heap. I don't like the OTT look, or styles which seem forced - ie, when a woman looks uncomfortable in too high platforms, wearing next to nothing in freezing temps. I don't find it offensive, just constricting.

I also don't like how Emmanuelle Alt's 'crowd' all tend to dress the same, however luxurious and lovely it may be. The clone look in this sense feels contrived........not keen on too much designer branding either. prefer subtlety.

I don't really have any style icons to be honest. The most stylish people, in my eyes, are those who dress for themselves and no one else.

Have never heard of most of the people mentioned here.

Audrey Hepburn's own style was v pared down and simple/stream-lined and still looks gorgeous and timeless now. Her looks and figure certainly didn't hinder that though.

I think the most stylish people don't follow fashion, or not avidly, and tend to keep their look based around key shapes, so:
slim leg trousers
a fitted tuxedo type jacket
a full skirt
a fitted shirt
But in good fabrics.

Who gets it wrong? People who think that leggings are trousers and not just thick tights / orange people / anybody who shows more flesh than is suitable for the weather and/or their body or age.

I read a fab book by Luella Bartley recently about English style for anyone who is interested, it really made me smile and celebrates lots of different looks.
