Is there such a thing as 'Mum' hair'?

oooh i don't know if it's 'mum' hair. it's more like 'my children have grown up and left home and i fancied something funky' round here. i was marvelling at how many women have that cut but with chunky colour thru it, usually hard red and white blonde stripes. the front is side parted down and the crown back combed. A very difficult look to carry off. Makes your face look hard. Pat Butcher stylee.

'Mum hair' needs a wash and is tied in a pony tail 24/7 unless its a rare occasion you get to go out then it looks perfect

I don't think that was "mum" hair, more "menopausal" hair.

"Gran" hair, for me anyway, needs to have a perm in it to give it more volume.

My mum has that exact hair and so do all her friends, but they are in their 70s so I agree its gran hair or menopausal hair, not mum hair. Why do they do it, it does make them look so much older!

I'll tell you why we they do it. It's because your hair turns to shit after the menopause. It gets thinner, and ceases to be the shiney, heavy silk of youth, but rather the uncontrollable candy floss of old age.

Also there is no hairstyle that is magically going to make us look 35 again, and mostly we're not going out on the pull, so we can please our bloody selves with something easy to look after for once in our lives.

Deffo Nanna hair - my 70y/o mum has a (much nicer) version of it, and so do most of her friends. I suppose a mum can be anything from teenage to old age - but I don't think I know anyone my own age (49) who has it - apart from the occasional fleece-dweller spotted at the school gate.

I see younger mums with this hair style but in a deep magenta/mahogany/violet with a longish bit down one side. Sort of a bit spiky. Hate that look.

I suppose it's the modern version of the once-a-week shampoo and set that was de rigeur for post-menopausal ladies when I was a youngster. It was and still is, terribly frowned-upon to have long hair if you are old. Which is why at just post-50 I'm growing mine again, but this time allowing the natural waves which I suppressed for years to become a mane of hippyness, no longer blonde, but white-silver.
My mother has had a very short version of the gran cut ( think Judi Dench) for years, which I do think looks fab. But you have to keep it very short.
