Please help! I've been medium ash blonde for a while and one I'm bored and two it's a bit orange!
I'd like a nice brown not mousy or red or orange. A rich chocolate I think.
Any ideas?

I'm 38 with mid-brown hair and have found in the last few years that practically all home-dyes bring out red tones in my hair which make it look dyed. The best I've found for not doing this is Castings in Light Brown. I find that I need to go at least 2 shades lighter than my natural shade now for it to look natural. Unfortunately the greys are spreading and I reckon I've only got a few more years of home dying before I have to bite the bullet and head to a salon.

Bizarrely the best for me is Aldi's Medium brown! Doesn't fade too badly and no red tones. Ridiculously cheap which probably puts people off but I've tried them all on my disgustingly grey hair and it's the best by far

All brown dyes bring out some red tones in my hair, even when done in a salon. I actually use Aveda Black Malva conditioner to darken my hair now! It's meant for bringing out cool, dark tones in brown or black hair, but has such strong pigment in that it dyes my light brown hair to a cool, bitter chocolate colour. Weird, I know. I only have use it once a week, because I think my hair would eventually turn black if I used it every time I washed it!

Thanks all. I will have a look at castings- that in boots or superdrug?
I guess I want light chocolate?
I need to go to salon but it's £££ here!

Going from a blonde to brown you need it to have a red base or you'll end up with lovely green tones (learn from my mistakes go to salon)
