I wouldn't trust a barber not to scalp tbh. My dh once took one of our 3 boys for a trim - he took him to the barber rather than our usual hairdresser - and he came back with the shortest hair I had ever seen. I will admit I cried.

I know even asking for a short back and sides ends up in a scalping

I would say barber. Choose a trendy looking place though as they may be more up to date. Or ask friends with boys where they go. My boys have had some great trendy cuts and it is usually cheaper. Maybe take a photo with what you want on? I often do the youngest myself as clippers are easy.

Don't go to the barber unless your son has the traditional short back and sides style! Some barbers are also hairstylists but not all, and you can't always choose who will cut your son's hair. All three of our boys have hair that's longish and only one of the ladies at our local barbers is capable of cutting it. Last time DH took them, she wasn't there, he went ahead anyway, and their haircuts were so bad that two of them were teased at school. I has to take them to a hairdresser for damage limitation and their hair is only just growing back to the length they prefer it, two months on.

For years, I took my boys to the same swanky hairdressers that I go to. I dislike that, 'one thuggish haircut for all' that so many boys get at barbers'.

I was however, spending £40 a time for the 2 of them.

Recently though, we've discovered a funky barber, owned by an ex 'proper' hairdresser. He spends ages on them and does a really trendy cut and it's only £12 each!

I take DS to my hairdressers - he has a mortal fear of the barbers after the barber cut DS's ear. The hairdresser who does mine now cuts it and charges £12.
