Since DF died I have taken over buying DM perfume for Christmas. It's always been Amarige by Givenchy, but this year she has decided that she fancies something new and I have no idea where to start!!

I only ever worn 3 different perfumes so don't really have that good a knowledge - does anyone more knowable have any suggestions of perfumes that smell similar to Amarige?

Given this is the first time my DM is going for a different perfume I would like to get her something nice so grateful for any help Smile

Mum is 60 and by no means an 'old lady' IYSWIM

Joy by Patou has a good amount of ylang ylang, as does First by Van Cleef et Arpels (ylang is prominent in Amarige).
Another ageless and elegant perfume that might suit her is 24, Faubourg by Hermes. It was released around the same time than Amarige, and is classically beautiful but not difficult to wear.

Finally, Cristalle by Chanel can be an elegant choice.

Try some of the Chanel ones such as Cuir De Russie - part of the exclusive range.

Chanel chance it's lovely. I got it for my mums 60th and she loved it. Also got lots of people asking what perfume she was wearing as it was very nice.

I have just bought a bottle of the new Liz Earle No 15 perfume. Initially I had a squirt from the John Lewis store and had 3 compliments within the hour (a male cashier at a store, a woman in a lift and my colleague at work). I had to go back to buy it!

This is the nicest perfume I've ever owned (and I have several different bottles of Chanel and Jo Malone perfumes)

I wear Chanel Chance and I love it.

My mum loves Tresor.

My aunt likes Amarige but fell in love with l'Air du Temps. Maybe try that one? Chanel cristalle is gorgeous but very different from Amarige so she may love it or not like it at all. Maybe buy her a set of mini perfumes with a promise to buy a ful size version of the one she likes best?

You are really nice to be so thoughtful towards your Mum.

Chanel Chance or Chanel Coco Noir. I wore the former solely for nine years as I simply couldn't find an alternative I liked as much (until Coco Noir came along this year!).

I got my Chanel exclusifs in House of Fraser on Buchanan Street, Glasgow if that helps anyone. They aren't only in boutiques.

Possibly not a good idea to buy her one of the Chanel Exclusifs blind unless she has tried one and loved it. They are £££££. Maybe order her a load of samples or ask at a few shops for samples so she can try before you buy?

I am not sure what Amarige smells like, but my mum loves Chanel no 5, J'adore Dior, a Caroline Herrera one can't remember the name sorry and has recently got into Gucci Flora and Marc Jacobs Daisy Fresh. (She likes her smellies!! Wink)

Have fun trying lots of them out!! Hope you and your mum are ok at Christmas without your DF, sorry for your loss x
