As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

Can anyone make any suggestions for affordable perfumes that don't smell cheap? I've found a few great ones but I really can't let myself enjoy expensive perfumes due to budget. I do however, use thrift techniques such as ebay and selling perfumes I don't like.

I daren't even smell anything I can't afford in case I get a fanatical glint in my eye and end up bankrupting my children.

I think 'Angel' is by far the worst perfume I have ever had the misfortune to apply my nose to. It's foul.

I am seriously considering buying a man's scent next, as I seem to prefer more masculine and far less 'fussy' smells than most perfumes.

Slag - I had a quick sniff at the new Lynn Harris (iirc) ones in M&S at the weekend and they seemed v good for the price.

Its really a question of taste isnt it, i quite like Angel. You might like to try Red Door. Think its Estee Lauder, not sure.

Red Door hates me.

I have had some success with Gres Cabotine, Ambre de Cabochard, and a fabulous Jesus del Pozo Ambar. I am convinced that you can smell nice without smelling cheap.

Remus- some of the M and S ones are very good, I was in there today. Let us not speak of the dreadful Florentyna, however...

I might give YSL Paris a try, as I like rose, and I see that around quite cheaply now. I'm hankering after Chanel No 22 now though, and Amouage Jubilation XXV, and Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather, and and and...so many lovely EXPENSIVE scents I've found from the last thread Sad

I have always loved Angel, though I accept it's not very sophisticated. I treated myself to a bottle on my birthday in the summer, and it kind of makes me a bit upset that so many people here seem to find it vile Sad. It's sort of taken some of the pleasure out of it for me, and I've not worn it much lately.

Red Door Is Elizabeth Arden. Some of hers are good, especially Fifth Avenue. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of Angel at all or anything too cocoa or vanilla or gourmand.

I'm looking for some recommendations... Generally I like what I would call green fresh smells. I wear Chanel no. 19, Calandre, O de Lancôme, and most days Eau Vitaminee by Biotherm ( which I LOVE but last two seconds). Non - green fresh perfumes I like are Gianfranco Ferre ( bottle with glass drop attached.... Irritatingly all Ferre fragrances have nearly the same name), the original Halston, and Aromatics Elixir and Wrappings by Clinique. I dislike Coco Mademoiselle, Tresor and Obsession deeply.

Anyone have any inspired suggestions of unusual fragrances I might try ( a little birthday money burning a hole in my wallet). Also to recap for late comers where are the best places to buy genuine decants if you are UK based. I need to read all of the original thread ( I have dipped in and out) but I need my kids to sleep more to give me a chance. thanks

I don't like an obvious vanilla either, YouOldSlag, but I somehow don't notice it in Angel- or maybe I'm just too entranced by the chocolate Grin.

It's funny, isn't it? Smells are so so personal. I love roses, but hate peach. I love chocolate, but I can't bear anything too sweet.

Have you tried Chanel Cristalle? it's my absolute favourite. I'm going on ebay on Boxing Day to buy everyone's leftovers.

pocketandsweet- try lessenteurs, scent and sensibility and ebay for UK based decants. I don't know of any others in the UK.

BOF- yes indeed. I loved Lily of the Valley until I smelt Splendour (Elizabeth Arden) and realise that fragrance had made it way too big and ruined it for me.
I do like Obsession, but only one squirt and about an hour before I leave the house, otherwise it makes people faint in my wake.

I've got a sample of that, yes! I must give it another chance- it didn't blow me away, but I'll have another go. What are the notes in it, would you say?

pocketandsweet · 13/11/2012 18:17

Funny I have Cristalle on right wrist and Cristalle Eau Vert on my left. I like them both so much.

Report
YouOldSlag · 13/11/2012 18:17

sorry BOF, what's your sample of?

Report
YouOldSlag · 13/11/2012 18:18

pocket- yes eau verte is lovely, like a bunch of freshly picked tulips.

I will have a lovely bottle of no 19 to eBay ( my very nice MIL accidentally bought by mistake instead of the ) ... I already have enough No 19 so I would rather sell it and buy something new

BOFingSanta · 13/11/2012 18:19

Chanel Cristalle, I meant is the sample.

Report
YouOldSlag · 13/11/2012 18:21

Cristalle is divine. I get green notes, lemon, subtle Lily of the Valley, it's just a dream.

Report
TheLightPassenger · 13/11/2012 18:22

I love Cristalle, it's crisp and stylish, in a no nonsense sort of way. That shilpa shetty one that was cheap a year or two back in home and bargain was pretty bogging really. but Britney Spears' curious was surprisingly good Blush

Bof - I used to like Opium, but people at my old work all slagged it off, so left me feeling meh about it.

I too love Jesus del Pozo Ambar,YouOld Slag but it last about 5 minutes on me.
How long does it last on you (just curious)?

Tuscan Leather is amazing and I am completely in love with it - but there is absolutely no way I could justify spending even half that much. :(

BOFingSanta · 13/11/2012 18:31

I know, Remus! I have loved trying inexpensive samples after the last thread, but I fear it has ruined me for affordable fragrances. All the ones I really fell for are ££££s.

Report
pocketandsweet · 13/11/2012 18:32

There seem to be lots of niche leather type smells but what about green fresh ones. I would love to find something unusual.
