If you took a guesstimate at how many items of clothes you owned, what would the answer be?

Mine is 60 garments though.

I'm over-thinking this, aren't I?

So you have no jackets, jeans, occasion wear, beach wear or shorts? What do you wear on holiday or to a function? What do you wear to go a walk in the country ? Or to do the garden?

I don't think I have a very large wardrobe but I have 3-4 summer day dresses, 2-3 summer more formal dresses, 4 knitted dresses for winter , 5 l/sjersey dresses, 3 occasion dresses . So that's nearly 20 on dresses alone

I would say I have > 500. I counted the hangers in my wardrobe for another thread and there were 160 and most have two things hanging on them. I also have a chest of drawers for tops, and my winter jumpers are all still in the loft as haven't got round to getting then down yet. I but far too many clothes

I included jeans in the trousers count Shock. One of the dresses is a black tie/cocktail/everything dress. And one of the pairs of trousers is a pair of skinny cords that I wear with big country boots for visiting my friend's horses/country walks etc.

You do seem overly obsessed interested with the amount of clothes you/other people have, from reading other threads! Stop thinking about it!

I know, I totally am! No idea why. I find it eternally fascinating, especially when I visit someone like my MIL who has literally four wardrobes stuffed with clothes, and I always wonder what the 'thing' is that is different about the way she shops and the way I shop. I am a complete wardrobe geek.

I find these sort of threads interesting. I have been having major wardrobe clearouts this year following dropping a couple of dress sizes in last 18 months. I don't think I have a huge wardrobe as the cost of replacing things isn't cheap.
Quick tot:
5 coat/jacket/blazer/quilted/waterproof/denim
6 cardigans /jumpers
6 dresses
4 skirts/shorts
8 shirts/blouses/tops
10 tops/Ts/vests
10 jeans/trousers/chinos/jeggings/leggings
5 scarves
14 shoes/boots/sandals/flipflops/pumps
4 bags

I also have a set of clothes and trainers for running.
I think I can get by on this but I am gradually adding to it. A couple more jumpers and some summer bits next year will be needed

What's scaring me is that you all seem to KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE < scared face >

I do have something of a problem with buying clothes, but I'm good at recycling them and ebaying them. Even so, I wish I were able to catalogue my wardrobe from memory!

And Hopefully you're not alone, I wonder all the time about how other people run their wardrobes, how much they have etc. I don't have any close girlfriends here so I no longer poke around in other women's closets, in fact I haven't since pre-kids (12 years!) so can no longer compare...

Hopefully I love your posts when I spy them. In fact Blush I once kept a copy of one of your wardrobe lists and used it as inspiration to have a huge clothing cull.

I reckon I have about 100 items, of which about 20 items rarely get worn. I'd like to have better co=ordinating things but that will be a work in progress.

I think I have a knitwear issue though. How can I need 17 jumpers? Including 4 ponchos?

Report
RarelyUnreasonable · 02/11/2012 21:14

Definitely fewer than 50 (including shoes and coats).

Am pg now so stuck in a tunic+leggings+boot rut, but have started to order things for afterwards (will be SAHM/WAHM). I'm aiming for:

3 x jeans (2 m&s jeggings, 1 superdry cord skinnies)
1 denim skirt (have already)

4 long sleeve scoop necks from boden (have) and kettlewell (to order). (T-shirts to replace these in Spring/Summer - need to check what I have already).

3 jumpers (gap merino - have already, uniqlo cashmere and mango sequins (on order).

I have enough boots to see me until Spring (aggies, uggs and flat riding boots), when I'll switch to superga and havaianas if the sun comes out this year!

I have a maternity coat that will do this year. Would like a wool blazer too. Have a lightweight trench and jacket for spring/summer. And a gilet.

I have two scarves and one hat. Brora wristwarmers are on my wishlist.

Am also obsessed w capsule wardrobes - a) I hate clutter and unused stuff everywhere and b) am skint. I also have a thing about natural fibres so follow your wardrobe posts with interest.

Oh gosh I couldn't even tell. I know I have from memory:
6 skinny jeans
4 boot cut jeans
4leggins
4 trousers
2 linen trousers
6 cocktail/poss events dresses
9 summer dresses
14 cardigans
6 jumpers
I must then have about 50 tops of various descriptions. Then there's summer shorts, beach wear, thermal wear, coats, pjs and shoes etc

Rarely that sounds a good list. I am really taken with the idea of a few good quality outfits that wash and wear well. Im not very good with fashionable flair, so find the idea comforting. I work part time so have my work wardrobe sorted, but my non work days clothes need some editing/improving.

Antidote you have alot of activity specific outfits, so I cant see how you'd cut them down, but, yes, I'd say 16 pairs of trousers and 17 sweaters seem more than one woman could need!

Hopefully I too love your wardrobe angsts, have been following your leather leggings traumas with much joy.

I think my wardrobes is pretty capsule but have an outfit for every occasion.

Coats/Jackets - 10 - see coats thread

Dresses -5, one beautiful - truly beautiful, £700 but fairly plain & versitle, ALC navy silk shift, can be dressed in many ways & hangs like a dream, one DVF wrap, plain, black, classic - go-to in times of need, one grey wool APC pinafore, mini, sleeveless, works well with loads of stuff, Denim button down shirt-dress, quite cowboy, don't wear it often, but when I do I love it. Wedding dress, navy blue, Christian Dior new look, beautiful, beautiful dress, I may wear it again, I will wear it again.

Skirts - One APC cord skirt, mid-thigh, tan, straight, works with loads of looks, one Cos denim A-line mini, one APC a-line denim knee length, one Burberry Brit mid-length kilt (NOT Burberry check)

Trousers - Jeans - 7FAM Straight jeans, Current/Elliot flares, 7FAM bootcut (don't sneer), Toast teal skinny jeans, slouchy tweed trousers from Topshop an age ago - everyone & me love them.

Tights & leggings - all coloured & style Falke, Wolford satin delux - black.

Knitwear - Various Sonia Rykiel knits (this is my downfall) , probably have about 10 Sonia knits, Crumpet cashmere long-length cardigans in navy, gray, oatmeal. Brora Fairisle Cardi. Iris & Ink V neck cashmere sweaters in oatmeal & navy. Brora tanks in gray, oatmeal & navy.

Tops - various jersey - lots of American Vintage & Wang, long-line jersey, vests, long-sleeved Ts, various colours. A few Bretons.

Shirts - One Margaret Howell white shirt, One Iris & Ink silk shirt, One Joseph striped shirt.

Shoes - Boots - Belstaff Agnes, Blue Suede Ash Jalouse, Toast Riggers, Stuart Wietzman 50/50, Hunters.

Shoes - Hudson Tan Brouges, Repetto pumps, Prada sandals X 2, one suede tan chunk heel with a blue trim, one butterfly. KG Plain brown wedges, one navy blue Laboutin court, one jeweled Choos.

Bags - Large old lady Miu Miu carpet bag, large Max-Mara satchel, small Miu Miu green slouchy, brown suede slouchy Furla, Tan Jones Saddle bag, a few vintage.

Scarves - Tons, too many, cashmere, silk, cotton - all styles

Hats - A few cashmere beanies, a Karl Donoghue rabbit fur trapper, a few trilbies,

Gloves - Leather, short & long, wristwarmers, cashmere,

& that's it - all of it.

So maybe 100.

Thanks, I enjoyed the mental wardrobe workout.

Are you talking about current season? I mean, is that what's in your wardrobe/drawers atm, with summer stuff in the loft? Or does that count everything?
Sounds like you're really good at editing (as an HoC consultant should be - am I right? Wink)

I think I own more than that, but probably only wear about a third - either because I'm waiting to lose weight and fit into things again, or because some things have seen better days but I'm slow to cull.

I do really need knitwear, though - I agree it's hard to find natural fibres without spending £££. Have seen a friend wearing a couple of Woolover cardis lately and they were a lovely flattering shape, so will prob place an order.

another vote here for hopefully's posts!

This is making me realise I need a clear out - tons of clothes but probably only wear/like about 30%! For example I have 11 coats/outer jackets and only the 2 denim jackets are keepers. Currently looking for a new winter wool coat.

6 dresses - of this 3 are work and 2 of them are over 3 years old and looking a bit tired and the other one is great quality but not a great fit! The other three are two casual dresses one of which I never wear and an occasion dress which is lovely but not worn in 6 years!

I could go on....I do fantasize about developing the perfect capsule wardrobe filled with clothes I adore and make me look amazing.

I couldn't count all my clothes as I hoard keep everything.

One it's too tatty for outside / presentable clothes it ends up as indoor clothes until it falls apart. And I'm still the same size as I was before kids so I've just kept the lot. Stuff that doesn't fit well it just in a huge bundle in case I decorate or do the garden.

I don't own any skirts though, I know that.

I fibbed a bit & do have loads of ephemera in my other wardrobe, stuff I've archived for my daughter, lots of flim & flam from when I had a life that involved a lot of going out.

It's fabulous stuff, but I don't wear it now, so it doesn't count.

Does it?
