I wrote a long post yesterday about this and it got eaten!

I want to know about the non-modelly, real-life people whose style makes you sigh a little with happy envy. I don't mean the people with the most high-end wardrobes, necessarily - just the people who Get It Right. What's the key to their look?

Oh dear, it used to be me, but I'm 6months preg so I'm excusing myself. Grin. Still wearing thick black tights, flat shoes and a little dress with a pea coat over the top. I like my look. It's sort of beatnik-y.

Ah Witches, I bet you look amazing! I wore the same kind of thing when preggers last autumn. I have to say, the three people that instantly come to mind for me in terms of Getting It Right are all childless...

Friend A, a beautiful porcelain doll of a girl, does stylish granny-chic but adds cool twists like peppermint nail polish.

Friend B, small and very ample-boobed, dresses for her figure to great effect. Pays attention to detail (eyebrows defined, lashes tinted, hair always fulsome and bouncy).

Friend C, a lithe New Yorker, dresses from charity shops and manages an amazing 1940s wartime vibe - battered tweed, brogues etc. and then occasionally adds rhinestone jewellery to keep us all on our toes!

The mum of one of my students. Just turned fifty, I understand, but not that she looks it. Very delicate with cool choppy dark hair. Wears very figure hugging dark trousers, merino tops in colours like plum, charcoal, mossy green, black clogs or tall boots, scarves in black and white. Sometimes wears a long knitted coat in subdued mixed colours. Has a tooled black messenger bag, covered in kowhaiwhai patterns. Looks lovely.

Also I have a friend who either gets it really right or really wrong, but when she gets it right - wow! Very tall woman and with a broad build. Amazing corkscrew curls to below shoulders - all natural. Looks great in black shortish a line skirts, leggings and tall chunky boots. Wears dark coloured long sleeved tops with a teal shrug over the top and amazing carved jewellery in the shape of a tree or a bird. Really good laugh too. Love her!

Another House of Colour consultant I know who has the most fabulous steel grey hair and wears extravagant things like suede buccaneer coats and skinny tartan trousers with ankle boots. And it works because it is exactly her. There is nothing prim, classic or sensible about her, and her clothes reflect that (as well as being perfect colours, obviously). I think knowing that rather than buying some mythical list of wardrobe classics/essentials is the key to any stylish person.

I like to think I do it too, but I'm still learning Grin

A lady in her late 50s. Simplicity and flowing, monochrome tailor-made clothes with classic, beautiful accessories (nothing that screams labels). I see her mostly in red and black, but always very chic. She collects modern art too.

My bestfriend. She wears classic, simple clothes.

She is one of those annoying people that can make a simple white shirt, jeans and riding boots type look expensive and uber-glam.she just throws stuff on and looks effortlessly chic. May have something to do with the fact she is 5'11 with gorgeous golden skin and those sexy Egyptian eyes (curses own pale rashy complexion and chicken kegs)

One of my friends always looks amazing. She's 9 months pregnant but still looks fab and stylish. It's not what she wears but she makes everything look good. She doesn't have a model perfect figure either so it must be something within.

My MIL, seriously, she is 70 and always looks amazing.

I have know her since i was a child (our parents go way back) and I remember as a child thinking how well put together she is/was IYSWIM

I think for her it is that she wears a bit of make up, not much mind, always has her hair done, sometimes she has it done at hairdressers sometimes herself (i'll never forget the time i came around to hers un-anounced and her hair had curlers in it, i did get a telling off!)

Clothing wise she has always gone for high end brands, not obvious ones, think Lakeland etc, and she looks after them and they have lasted.

She picks classic clothing, similar to what someone else said, eg a lovely shirt with a blazer and nice pants - not jeans, or a twin set.

She also wears pearls - always, i love them too.

She is about 5ft5 and i would say a size 14.

I really do admire her.

My Best Mate Suze

She's a size 14/16 and utterly beautiful. Thick glossy naturally curly hair, perfect figure (think Marilyn M) olive skin, immaculate dress sense, big green eyes. The best looking person I have met in RL, ever.

Unfortunately she does not see it, is on a permadiet as she thinks she is fat. She is not fat, has never been fat and will never be fat. Her mother has a lot to answer for (God rest her soul) IMO. Sad

A mum at school said to me last year, "you always look so well put together and always seem to wear exactly the right thing". What she didn't know is that I spend ages in front of my ridiculously over flowing wardrobe choosing and planning outfits. I have a huge amount of clothes and shoes so loads of choice (ranging from monsoon to next to primark and new look). I often put something on only to take it off again. I plan outfits the day before and I pride myself on wearing everything I have and none of it becoming "dead" IYSWIM.

Having said that I often get it wrong and look like a dogs dinner. Grin

A barrister friend always looks amazing, whether at court or more relaxed. She manages to be stylish and elegant as well as being a bit quirky. She has white blonde hair and fabulous accessories. I always feel like a sweaty frump next to her!

One of my best friends has the most incredible style. She can make a Primark dress look vintage.

My Mum is very stylish, always well groomed, puts makeup on and does her hair first thing even if not going out. Always buys an 'outfit' eg: makes sure she has top/skirt/shoes/hosieryjewellry (sp?) and even underwear that goes together.

Only problem she has now is that at 78 she is finding heels a little difficult Grin

She must despair of her 4 scruffy daughters

My closest friend's mum always looks so chic. She's mid 60s, possibly a size 14/16. Typical outfit is white fitted trousers and a stripy top, or navy shift and pearls. She always looks effortlessly elegant.

Another friend of mine never fails to look gorgeous. I wouldn't class her as super stylish but she looks lovely. She really rocks the Anthropologie look with different textures and layers and has great jewellery. I don't think I've ever seen her wearing the same item twice.

And a colleague always looks great, very classic and elegant. White shirts, grey/navy trousers, leopard print shoes.

Interesting that so many 'older' women are admired for their style. It's an attitude as much as anything IMO.

Just thought of another, my friends great grandmother. She is so glamorous. Slim, beautiful jewellery, classic clothes. Always wears lip stick and frequently nail polish too. She is supremely elegant. She's 85 I think.

My good friend. I'm not sure what she does but always looks great. Has a very eclectic style - skinnies and boots one day and lovely dess the next but always seems to get it right. She has lovely red hair and it adventurous yet not OTT with her styling. Make up always good. Attractive but not drop dead but always looks fab. Can't quite put my finger on why.

One of the mums at school. She looks fab. She dresses like a Northern Italian e.g. very timeless, stylish, but not fashion faddy. Fitted, quilted jacket, skinny jeans, leather ballet pumps or loafers, nice sunglasses, minimal jewellery, long shiny hair, nice little scarf...... She looks how I try to look, but pulls it off! I think the fact she also has a lovely, neat, petite figure helps. DH gets cross with me as I pull myself to bits when I get dressed.

MustTidy, I wish I had red hair, it's lovely isn't it!
