How to wear a skirt if you are short and fat

Title sums it up really. I would love to wear more skirts, but don't know what sort to wear, and in particular what to wear with it. I currently have one maxi skirt that I wear with a semi-fitted t-shirt that is quite forgiving on the tummy. But I would like to wear something smarter, and also to find another suitable shape of skirt, as maxi skirts seem to be hard to come by these days, especially for the petite!

I have chicken drumstick shaped legs, which means they don't make children cry from about mid-thigh down. For casual I wear Just above or on the knee a-line in denim/suede/whatever with heels/heeled boots. Dresses I find easier as their fabrics are more forgiving. I've yet to find work skirts which don't make me look like a house... especially as I require a skirt to have a waist.

I think that most people can wear a pencil skirt (I'd probably go for a stretchy one, for comfort), with opaques and boots (either ankle or knee high, but with a heel) or even high heeled shoes, if you are up to wearing them.

I think a fitted but not tight top, that is slightly longer cut than most tshirts, just to cover tummy and bum.

I also wear leggings with shorter dresses over the top, with ballet flats or ankle boots.

See I'm going to have to disagree with that. Tight stretchy pencil skirt teamed with leggings and ballet flats will make you look like a fat humpty dumpty.

Think Karen from will & grace rather than butterball from croydon.

Thanks ladies. Dolomites what tops would you wear with your skirts please? And what height boots?

I wouldn't put a pencil skirt with leggings. I would put a pencil skirt with opaque tights.

I would put leggings with tunic tops.

Definitely not leggings, skirt and flat shoes

Ishoos, I tend to wear a slightly fitted top, e.g., a fitted v t-shirt, jumper or cardi which finishes about 4" above my widest bit of saddlebag. If you wear a top down to your widest part or below it, you just end up looking like a ship in full sail. :( whilst I'm never going to look 8 stone, I can stop myself looking frumpy iyswim. Because I've got its & waist I always make sure I go in at the waist.

Boots with to knee or just below. I'd not wear ankle boots except under trousers and I never wear flats because they make me look like a lesbian. A fat, frumpy one.

I'm very wary of pencil skirts, always a bit "farmers wife" for me, you know, completely square. A pencil skirt should be longer than it is wide. ;)
